Patent number: 6290711Abstract: A connector for joining sections of flexible material includes a locking member that has an engagement portion at a distal end and that can support a flexible member at a proximal end. An outer member is engageable with the locking member's engagement portion and is movable between a disengaged position and a locking position in cooperation with the locking member. When the outer member is in the locking position, the flexible material piece is retainable along the nonlinear path against movement between the locking member and the outer member. The connector is lockable at a desired surgical site in a generally collinear fashion with the flexible material piece. The nonlinear pathway defined by the material enhances the strength of the connection, which is particularly effective in the case of suture material, which is known to slip easily. The piece of material to be secured may include one or more pieces of suture or a loop of suture having two ends, or sections of wire, cable, or tissue pieces.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Innovasive Devices, Inc.Inventors: Richard B. Patent number: 6036694Abstract: The device for affixing a flexible load-bearing element within a bone tunnel includes a securing element that attaches to the flexible element. A bone tunnel fixation element has an outer surface that is adapted to movably engage the bone tunnel. A deformable biasing element is positionable within the fixation element bore adjacent the proximal end. A locking member is dimensioned for movement within the fixation element bore and is positionable adjacent the distal end thereof. The locking member is lockable to the securing element, and the biasing means is for biasing the locking member toward the bore's distal end. Thus as a tension is applied to the securing means, a deformation of the biasing element is caused that is indicative of a magnitude of the applied tension. Therefore, a common element serves to perform pretensioning, and the need for a separate tensioning system is obviated.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1998Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: Innovasive Devices, Inc.Inventors: E. Patent number: 6017348Abstract: A bone plug removal and emplacement tool includes a cylindrical cutting element having a proximal cutting edge and a cutting tooth. The outer surface of the cutting element can include an integral shoulder (e.g., in lieu of a replaceable outer sheath) that is spaced-apart from the proximal cutting edge and that engages the surface of the bone to define a depth stop for the cutting edge. An additional cylindrical element can be disposed within the cutting element. The proximal end of that additional element, which is referred to as a "harvester," is substantially aligned with the proximal end of the cutting element to receive a plug cut from the bone. The harvester can be slidably withdrawn from the cutting element to facilitate transplating the bone plug at another location. For this purpose, a stem or plunger can be slidably inserted and moved in the harvester to dislodge the plug.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1997Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Innovasive Devices, Inc.Inventors: Rickey D. Patent number: 5935129Abstract: The invention provides anchoring devices and methods for coupling an object, such as a suture or soft tissue, to bone. In one aspect of the invention, a bone anchor is placed into compression fit with a predrilled bone hole by pulling an insertion stem at least partially into an anchoring element. In its non-expanded state, the anchoring element is slidably mounted on the proximal end of the insertion stem. The anchoring element has an axial channel at least a portion of which has an inner diameter (or cross-section) smaller than an outer diameter (or cross-section) of at least one portion of the insertion stem. As that larger portion of the insertion stem is pulled through the channel, it causes the walls of the anchoring element to expand outwardly and, thereby, to engage the bone hole walls in a pressure or compression fit.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Innovasive Devices, Inc.Inventors: Dennis McDevitt, John Rice, Mark A.
