  • Patent number: 5662233
Abstract: A wine closure replaces the traditional cork and foil and includes a gasket/stopper which engages into the neck of the bottle. Encasing the finish and upper neck of the bottle is a plastic outer closure cap, generally cylindrical, with a top center disc which is adhered to the top of the stopper. A circle of frangible elements at the periphery of the disc provide for breakage of the disc away from the sleeve, causing it to remain with the stopper when the plastic cap is opened. Coarse, short-length threads are formed on the outside of the container neck, spaced appreciably below the finish, to be engaged by internal thread lugs of the plastic cap. On initial unscrewing of the cap, the disc breaks away from the remainder of the cap. A small vertical clearance is provided in the engagement between the internal cap structure and the gasket/stopper, so that the cap does not begin to lift the gasket/stopper until static friction against the elastomeric gasket/stopper has been overcome.

  • Patent number: 5603787
Abstract: A plastic container for pourable liquids such as detergents has a drain back feature and has an internal thread for receiving an externally threaded cap which also serves as a measuring cup for the liquid. The container is formed in two pieces, a container body and a separately formed pour spout component which is assembled to the container finish preferably by ultrasonic welding. In preferred embodiments a lip of the pour spout component is pressed and welded down onto an annular top surface of the container finish, or down into an annular recess on the container finish. The ultrasonic welding operation is accompanied by motion and pressure, simultaneously deforming and welding the top edge of the pour spout component wall down onto the container finish, so that the connection forms a liquid tight seal.

  • Patent number: 5582315
Abstract: A threaded closure for large-mouth containers has a handle which swings up or down on a horizontal pivot, and closes a vent hole when in the downward position. A pour spout rotates on an inclined off-vertical axis, to store the pour spout closely alongside the top surface of the closure, sealing off the pour spout, or to rotate outward to an upwardly inclined pouring position in which the spout is open. The vent hole in the top of the closure has a negative draft for a snap fit with a nipple or plug on the handle. Another preferred element of the closure construction is that the handle is held onto the closure body with polygonally shaped pegs extending into similarly shaped holes in the closure body. The handle thus tends to stay in different selected positions when pouring. The plastic handle itself is molded to a smaller reach width, so that it is stretched when assembled and continuously exerts a force inward against the closure body, reliably holding the pegs in the holes.

  • Patent number: 5455180
Abstract: A closure for a medical specimen test jar includes a threaded closure ring and a separate, connected but freely rotatable sealing gasket on the underside of the ring. An agar paddle is secured to the closure via the gasket at the inside of the closure ring, the gasket material being relatively rigid, and the connection with the agar paddle being such as to retain the agar paddle securely. A matrix of posts is included on each side of the agar paddle, and in the production of the paddle the posts and a perimeter rim around each side of the agar paddle are staked down by heat and pressure to form overhanging flanges on the posts and an undercut rim which serve to retain the flexible agar mass in place on the test paddle. At the center of the closure is a needle-penetrable septum for receiving injection of blood or other specimens.
