Patents Assigned to Intuitive Surgical
  • Patent number: 11998296
Abstract: Disclosed herein are apparatus and method for resisting external articulation of one or more joints of a manipulator assembly when the joints are approaching mechanical limits. For example, an articulable system may include a joint mechanism, an actuator coupled to the joint mechanism, a sensor system for sensing a joint state and a controller. The controller can operate the articulable system in an external articulation facilitation mode. The controller can command the actuator to resist movement of the joint in response to the joint state indicating the joint is moving toward a mechanical limit location with a joint velocity meeting a first velocity criterion. The controller can also command the actuator resist movement of the joint at a second joint position when the joint velocity meets a second criterion.

  • Patent number: 12002208
Abstract: Technology described herein can be embodied in a method that includes obtaining, using an endoscopic camera, a plurality of images of the surgical scene, each image in the plurality of images being obtained under illumination by electromagnetic radiation in a corresponding wavelength range. The corresponding wavelength ranges are selected in accordance with a set of chromophores present in the surgical scene, and any two of the corresponding wavelength ranges partially non-overlapping. The method also includes determining, based on the plurality of images, a concentration of each of one or more chromophores in the set at various portions of the surgical scene, and generating, by one or more processing devices, based on information about the concentration of each of the one or more chromophores, a representation of the surgical scene. The method further includes presenting the representation of the surgical scene on an output device associated with the surgical device.

  • Patent number: 11992936
Abstract: A surgical system uses a single entry port in a wide variety of surgeries. To insert multiple surgical instruments into a patient through a single entry port requires that the shaft of at least one of the surgical instruments be bent between the base of the surgical instrument and the point where the shaft contacts a channel in an entry guide. Each surgical instrument is positioned by an instrument manipulator positioning system so that when the shaft is inserted in a channel of the entry guide, any bending of the shaft does not damage the surgical instrument and does not inhibit proper operation of the surgical instrument.

  • Patent number: 11992273
Abstract: A system and method of displaying images from an imaging device includes a display device and one or more processors. The one or more processors are configured to track movement of an imaging device, determine a display-device-to-imaging-window transform based on the tracked movement and a corresponding command to move the imaging device, and render an image received from the imaging device on the display device at a position and orientation on the display device based on the display-device-to-imaging-window transform. In some embodiments, the display-device-to-imaging-window transform is determined based on at least one of a difference between: a commanded and an actual position of the imaging device, a commanded and an actual orientation of the imaging device, a commanded and an estimated position of the imaging device, or a commanded and an estimated orientation of the imaging device.

  • Patent number: 11992281
Abstract: A bifurcated navigation control system defines a path whereby a manipulator cart is to navigate from an initial location to a target location. The system directs the manipulator cart to navigate, in a first bifurcated navigation control mode associated with a primary control interface that facilitates both operator control of steering and propulsion, along at least part of a first portion of the path from the initial to an intermediate location. The system further directs the manipulator cart to navigate, in a second bifurcated navigation control mode associated with a secondary control interface that facilitates operator control of propulsion but not steering, along at least part of a second portion of the path from the intermediate to the target location. In the first and second bifurcated navigation control modes, the system autonomously controls the steering of the manipulator cart while allowing operator control of the propulsion of the manipulator cart.

Abstract: A medical instrument includes a backend and a pair of release elements. The backend includes a docking feature shaped to engage a docking structure such as a docking port of a surgical robot or a sterile adaptor for a surgical robot. Each release element is coupled to the backend and may include an activation feature on one side of the backend and a push tab extending from either an opposite side or the same side of the backend. Movement of the activation features moves the push tabs from being aligned with the docking feature to pushing on the docking structure, permitting the medical instrument to be disengaged from the docking structure.
