Publication number: 20150333826Abstract: A control system and method in an optical burst mode network, said network comprising a plurality of channels, at least one channel adapted to carry bursts of data from multiple sources, the control system is configured to calculate a per channel gain measurement from the acquisition of per source received burst data measurements at a channel termination point. The control system facilitates automated per channel optical power monitoring and equalisation without human intervention over the operational life span of the optical system.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2013Publication date: November 19, 2015Applicant: INTUNE NETWORKS LIMITEDInventors: Tom Farrell, David Galbraith, Giuseppe Talli, Emilio Bravi

Patent number: 8971320Abstract: The invention provides a control layer for an Optical Burst Switch (OBS) system, said system comprising at least one stage configured with a closed optical burst switch addressing scheme and one or more ports for sending or receiving data packets. The control layer comprises a control addressing scheme independent of the closed optical addressing scheme and means to provide interconnectivity for each port with every other port. In one embodiment there is provided a closed optical burst switch ring network. The control layer encapsulates or maps the optical data at a port into an independent packet format and passes the independent packet format into a queuing system for transmission by the optical burst switch ring network to a destination port.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2011Date of Patent: March 3, 2015Assignee: Intune Networks LimitedInventors: James Alexander Shields, John Dunne

Patent number: 8699875Abstract: The invention relates to a system and method of dispersion measurement in an optical fiber network. The invention provides means for transmitting from a transmitting node, using a single tunable laser transmitter, two consecutive bursts of data at different wavelengths ?1 and ?2 to a receiver node, wherein each burst of data comprises a unique sequence of amplitude modulated data, and wherein the two sequences are injected with a fixed known delay. The delay between the two consecutive bursts of data is maintained by selective switching of the tunable laser, such that clock recovery circuitry at the receiver node remains locked during the delay between the two bursts. The dispersion measurements method of the present invention is based on walk off and bit position detection between two wavelengths suitable for fast optical burst switching network is described. This method does not require an operator, extra equipment, or traffic interruption on the network.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2011Date of Patent: April 15, 2014Assignee: Intune Networks LimitedInventors: Emilio Bravi, Giuseppe Tali, David McDonald, Michael Todd, David Bernard

Patent number: 8670676Abstract: The invention relates to an optical modulator control system implemented in an optical burst mode transmitter, said control system comprising means for measuring a plurality of optical power sample values and associated optical wavelength data values from a modulator at a first sampling rate, wherein an average power table is generated from said values for each sample period and stored in a memory. The control system also comprises means for performing a control error calculation from two or more stored average power tables at a second sampling rate to calculate a single error value to provide gain and/or bias control signals, wherein the second sample rate is sampled at a slower rate than the first sample rate. The control system described optimises the modulator performance over temperature and lifetime in an optical network.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2010Date of Patent: March 11, 2014Assignee: Intune Networks LimitedInventor: Richard Oberland

Patent number: 8577221Abstract: The invention provides an optical burst switch in an Optical Burst Switched (OBS) communication network, said optical burst switch comprising means for monitoring and maintaining mesh of virtual optical paths from a communication node to a plurality of other communication nodes, arranged in a ring network, enabling traffic data to be transmitted and/or received between nodes via a physical optical path. The switch also provides means for sending a data packet probe on a virtual path from a node to each other node in the OBS communication network, wherein data packet probe information received at said switch provides information of availability of the physical optical path for sending traffic data between nodes. The switch can be configured such that the rate at which this path monitoring is scheduled guaranteeing less than 50 ms protection switch in the event of monitoring a failed or degraded path.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2010Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: Intune Networks LimitedInventors: David McDonald, Tom Farrell, Jim Shields, John Courtney

Patent number: 8494365Abstract: The invention provides a burst transmission optical fiber wavelength routed ring network and method comprising a plurality of nodes on a network ring where each node can drop and add a wavelength. The network has a control means to control the wavelength to be transmitted on the network ring in a burst transmit mode from each node over a scheduling interval. The invention provides a random generator for generating a plurality of gap intervals over the scheduling interval, such that the gap intervals allow for wavelengths from different nodes to transmit wavelengths in said gaps to achieve a fair access to bandwidth and fair latency in the ring network.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2011Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignee: Intune Networks LimitedInventors: Tom Farell, Shane O'Neill
