Patents Assigned to J. P. Tool Limited
  • Patent number: 4765783
Abstract: A face milling tool is described having a rotatable holder with a plurality of cutting inserts detachably secured to an end face in a circumferentially spaced and axially and radially stepped relation. Each insert is mounted in a pocket formed in the holder end face, the pocket having a deep wedge receiving portion and an adjacent shallower cutting insert retaining portion. The insert retaining portion includes a flat side wall against which a cutting insert rests. The wedge receiving portion includes a concave side wall portion opposite the flat side wall and a bottom wall with a tapped hole. Each wedge includes a first side face with a convex projection for sliding movement upwardly and downwardly within the concave side wall portion and a flat second side face opposite the first side face for engaging a side face of an insert. A vertical abutment shoulder projects outwardly from one end of the flat second side face of the wedge and this shoulder is adapted to abut an end face of the insert.

  • Patent number: 4672868
Abstract: A cross-feed facing head is described which includes a housing adapted to be mounted on a spindle for rotation therewith. Slides are mounted in transverse slideways on an end face of the housing, the slides including means for mounting cutting tools and being adapted for movement transversely to the axis of the rotation of the housing. An actuating member is axially, slideably mounted within the housing and has external helical teeth thereon. An annular gear member is mounted within the housing for rotation about the axis thereof and this annular gear member has gear teeth on the outer cylindrical edge thereof and further gear teeth on the inner cylindrical edge thereof, these inner teeth being preferably in the form of a series of spaced and adjustable racks mounted in pockets in the inner cylindrical edge with the teeth thereof mating with the external helical teeth of the actuating member.

  • Patent number: 4586855
Abstract: A face milling tool is described including a holder securable to the end of a rotatable spindle. Cutting inserts are detachably secured to the end face of the holder at a radial distance from the axis of the spindle. The cutting edges of the inserts extend outwardly of the holder end face such that the cutting edges are free to engage and machine the surface of a workpiece. The inserts are of a wafer-like form and means are provided for detachably securing the inserts to the holder through a central axial aperture in the inserts. The securing means lies within the outer end face of each insert and the cutting edge of each is substantially straight, being formed by a portion of an edge at the intersection of the insert side wall and the end face. Each insert lies at such an angle to the plane of the workpiece that the insert side wall forms a rake face and the outer end face of the insert forms a clearance face and the straight cutting edge lies at a small radial shear angle.

  • Patent number: 4569619
Abstract: A metal cutting tool is described having an elongated tool body with an elongated, preferably arcuate, tool face portion. A plurality of recesses are formed in the tool face, each having a flat bottom face inclined inwardly and rearwardly to the longitudinal axis of the tool body. Each recess contains an indexable small, square, thin cutter insert with a bottom face resting on the flat bottom of the recess. Each insert has a flat bottom face, while the top face has a shallow generally spherical convex contour. Each side face is generally concave and forms an arcuate cutting edge with the convex top face. Each side face forms an acute angle with the top face of the insert, and the magnitude of this acute angle and the degree of inclination of the recess flat bottom face are such as to provide a positive rake angle of 1.degree.-30.degree. between the cutter portion and the work cut.

  • Patent number: 3946472
Abstract: A broaching tool is described having an elongated tool body with a plurality of spaced ribs disposed generally transverse to the longitudinal body axis. Each such rib defines a substantially circular arc of at least 45.degree.. A plurality of cylindrical cutter discs are mounted along each rib, each disc being positioned with its longitudinal axis disposed within 1.degree.-15.degree. of coincidence with the longitudinal axis of the body. Each disc has an end face providing a cutting edge disposed about the periphery of the end face. The discs along each arcuate row are circumferentially staggered with respect to the discs of the next adjacent rib with each disc projecting beyond the outer face of the rib and being rotatably indexable about its axis to bring successive cutting portions into cutting positions.
