  • Patent number: 8472012
Abstract: An apparatus measuring optical characteristics including position detection is disclosed. A processor is coupled to a display. A first optical sensor makes a first measurement, and a second optical sensor makes a second measurement. A source of illumination and the first optical sensor determine a minimal distance between the apparatus and an external object such that illumination emitted by the source is not received by the first optical sensor when the apparatus is less than the minimal distance from the external object. A position of the apparatus with respect to an object and an optical property of light received by the apparatus are determined. A transparent member with a thickness less than the minimal distance may provide illumination external to the apparatus and receive light from external to the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8159666
Abstract: Methods in a spectral measurement apparatus are disclosed. Light is received with a plurality of sensors. Each sensor generates an output signal having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor. First, second and third signals are generated each having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by a sensor of a wavelength or spectral band. A spectral characteristic of the received light is determined based on at least the first, second and third signals, which are are coupled to a processing element and input in parallel. The spectral characteristic is determined based on measuring a frequency or period of the at least first, second and third signals. Spectral data based on the determined spectral characteristic is generated by the processing element and displayed on a display device for perception by a viewer or transmitted to a data interface for transmission to an electronic device external to the spectral measurement apparatus.

Abstract: A method for outputting a closest match of a plurality of electronically stored shade guide values of a dental shade guide system is disclosed. A protective tip including a hole for couples light from a probe to a measurement spot on a dental object. The probe is in proximity to a reference standard and a calibration/normalization measurement of the reference standard is taken. Light returned from the dental object is measured with an optical sensor. A first frequency proportional to an intensity of a first wavelength/spectral band of light is determined, a second frequency proportional to an intensity of a second wavelength/spectral band is determined, and a third frequency proportional to an intensity of a third wavelength/spectral band of light is determined. A closest match is selected of a plurality of electronically stored shade guide values of one or more dental shade guide systems.

  • Patent number: 7682150
Abstract: A method for preparing a dental prosthesis based on electronically determined image and color/shade data of a patient's tooth is disclosed. The image data and the color/shade data are displayed on a display device in the dental office. The image data and color/shade data are transmitted to a computing device at a remote location over a data communication channel. A telephone communication is established between a dental professional in a location proximate to the dental office and a dental technician or ceramist in a location proximate to the remote location while the dental professional and the dental technician or ceramist are commonly viewing the image and color/shade data. The dental prosthesis is prepared at the remote location based on the electronically transmitted image and color/shade data. Color/shade data of the dental prosthesis is electronically determined and the dental prosthesis is selectively modified prior to installing the dental prosthesis in the patient.

  • Patent number: 7403285
Abstract: A method for determining spectral characteristics of an object is disclosed. A probe is positioned in proximity relative to the object. The probe provides light from at least first and second light sources positioned first and second distances from a central light receiver. The first light source and the central light receiver define a first critical height from the surface below which no specularly reflected light from the first light source is received by the central light receiver, and the second light source and the central light receiver define a second critical height from the surface below which no specularly reflected light from the second light source is received by the central light receiver. The first critical height is different from the second critical height.
