Patent number: 6670011Abstract: An elongated fibrous insulation blanket is pre-cut for custom fitting the insulation blanket into wall, floor, ceiling and roof cavities of different widths formed by the framework of a building. The blanket has at least one, preferably two or three, series of cuts extending between major surfaces of the blanket with successive cuts of each series of cuts being separated by a series of separable connectors located intermediate the major surfaces of the blanket. Each series of separable connectors hold together adjacent sections of the blanket for handling, but are separable by hand so that the blanket can be handled as a unit for insulating a cavity having a predetermined width or easily separated by hand into two or more sections at one or more of the series of separable connectors for insulating a cavity having a lesser width.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2001Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Larry J. Publication number: 20030205067Abstract: A bushing for fiberizing molten material, such as molten glass, having a screen mounted in the bushing spaced above the tip or orifice plate with a central portion of the screen having a significantly lower percent of hole area than the percent of hole area in end portions of the screen. This bushing improves fiberizing efficiency in channel positions of a fiberizing operation. Also, such a screen can be laid on top of a conventional screen to convert a normal bushing to a channel position bushing. Methods of using these types of bushings to improve fiberization in the channel positions and for modifying conventional bushings for other uses are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 23, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Applicant: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventor: Russell Donovan Arterburn

Patent number: 6630222Abstract: An acoustic medium for temporary acoustic treatment of a room is formed from one or more continuous curtains, preferably, with pleated first and second major surfaces. Each pleated curtain preferably has one or more series of collapsible elongated tubular sections which form the pleats that make up the major surfaces of the curtain. Since the elongated tubular sections are collapsible, the curtain can be retracted by collapsing the elongated tubular sections and extended by opening the elongated tubular sections. The mat materials forming the elongated tubular sections and the pleated major surfaces of the curtain provide the curtain with an airflow resistance through the curtain, in a direction generally perpendicular to the planes containing the apexes of the pleats forming the first and second major surfaces of the curtain, that has the desired properties for absorbing or reflecting sound.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2000Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Ralph Michael Fay, Lawrence J. Patent number: 6619573Abstract: A chopper for chopping items such as fibers, fiber strands, ribbon, etc. by passing the items continuously in a loose, unwound, condition through the nip of a blade roll and a backup roll having a working layer on its outer periphery. The chopper of the present invention uses one or more rolls that are radially expandable and retractable to replace the blade roll and/or the backup roll on the prior art choppers so that worn blades and/or a worn working layer can be more quickly and more easily replaced with a new or repaired working layer or blade holder containing sharp blades. The chopper of the present invention eliminates the need to carry large, heavy, awkward rolls through the fiber forming rooms or areas where the items are being chopped and also to transport such rolls back and forth to the location where they are being rebuilt.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2001Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Russell Donovan Arterburn, Randall Clark Bascom

Publication number: 20030139111Abstract: A new foam coated nonwoven fibrous mat having properties particularly suited for a facer on gypsum wallboard, laminates made therefrom and the method of making the mat is disclosed. The mat preferably contains a major portion of glass fibers and a minor portion of a resinous binder. The foam coating is permeable and reduces fiber dust and abrasion experienced in the past with relatively coarse, relatively inexpensive glass fibers in the mat. Contrary to previous methods, the foam coated fibrous mat is made in-line on a wet mat forming production line by applying a wet foam binder onto a wet, fibrous web followed by drying and curing in-line.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2003Publication date: July 24, 2003Applicant: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Richard Emil Kajander, Alan Michael Jaffee, Glenda B. Patent number: 6584809Abstract: In an apparatus and method of forming fibers from a fiberizable material, a molten fiberizable material is introduced into a rotating fiberizing rotor and passed through a plurality of holes in an annular peripheral sidewall of the fiberizing rotor to form primary fibers from the fiberizable material. The primary fibers are introduced into hot combustion gases and pressurized air in a fiberization zone adjacent an outer surface of the annular peripheral sidewall of the rotary fiberizing rotor to attenuate and form the primary fibers into fibers of the desired diameter and length. The hot combustion gases are discharged from an annular air cooled burner and the pressurized air, which is discharged from an annular air ring, is the same pressurized air used to cool the annular air cooled burner.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2000Date of Patent: July 1, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Edward Gross, Michael Dean Peterson

Patent number: 6579586Abstract: A fibrous insulation batt is encapsulated within an envelope to form an encapsulated insulation batt assembly. The envelope has pressure sensitive adhesive on lateral flanges or surfaces of the envelope for securing the encapsulated insulation batt assembly to spaced-apart frame members defining a cavity to be insulated. Release liners, on surfaces of the envelope or the lateral flanges, which overlay and are releasably secured to the pressure sensitive adhesive, are removed from the pressure sensitive adhesive immediately prior to bonding the encapsulated insulation batt assembly to the spaced-apart frame members. Preferably, the release liners for the pressure sensitive adhesive are contact areas on the surfaces of the envelope or the lateral flanges coated or otherwise treated with a release agent.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2000Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Ralph Michael Fay, William D.
