Publication number: 20050164806Abstract: A golf club head includes a face insert disposed in a cavity formed in the front face of the club head. The face insert has a front surface for impacting a golf ball and a back surface having a cavity formed therein for receiving a second insert. A second insert, composed of a material different from the first insert, is disposed in the cavity formed in the back of the first insert. Because the edges of the second insert are not exposed, the second insert can be made of very soft materials including silicone rubbers and gels, which would not be suitable for use in an application in which the edges are exposed.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 23, 2004Publication date: July 28, 2005Applicant: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: John Solheim, David Jones

Patent number: 6877364Abstract: A swing weight scale is presented that measures the swing weight of a golf club by measuring the torque exerted by the club about fixed balance point. The apparatus comprises an elongated torque arm pivotally mounted to a base. At one end of the torque arm a pair of rollers cradle the shaft of the golf club from underneath. At the other end of the torque arm a vertical stop provides a reference for locating the butt of the golf club shaft and provides the mounting surface for a second pair of rollers that cradle the upper surface of the shaft at the butt end. The rollers allow the golf club shaft to freely rotate about its longitudinal axis so that the golf club head will hang down freely. A torque sensor is mounted at the pivot point of the torque arm to measure the torque produced by the golf club as it is supported by the torque arm.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventor: Mitchell E. Patent number: 6877201Abstract: An apparatus for positioning and holding a golf club for installation of a golf club grip comprises a shaft cradle, a shaft clamp and a positioning device. The positioning device comprises a platen that is moveable toward and away from the axis of the golf club shaft when the golf club shaft is positioned in the apparatus. Mounted to the platen are a fixed stop and an opposing moveable ram. The fixed stop has a stop surface that is adapted to engage the face of the club so that as the opposing moveable ram presses the golf club head against the fixed stop, the face will assume an orientation flush against the surface of the fixed stop, thus aligning the club face with the stop surface. The entire platen assembly is moveable toward and away from the axis of the golf club shaft so as to accommodate golf clubs having different offsets.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: Frank Gunshinan, Kendall Horstman

Patent number: 6743112Abstract: A golf putter head having a visual alignment aid includes a face member and a back body both of which may be selected from a plurality of differently configured face members and back bodies. The face member has a front surface, a top ledge, a rear surface, and a visual alignment aid comprising a rear edge parallel to the front surface. The rear edge is defined by the intersection of the rear surface and the top ledge. The back body comprises a flange portion that extends rearwardly and has an upper surface that is displaced below the top ledge. The face member and back body are selected from materials having contrasting colors so that the rear edge of the face member is contrasted against the background of the back body.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2002Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventor: Michael J. Publication number: 20030203765Abstract: A golf club having suppressed vibration modes is disclosed. The club comprises a shaft, a golf club head, a grip and a plurality of discrete shaft stiffeners. The shaft stiffeners are strategically located along the shaft so as to shift the nodes of at least the second and third flexural vibration modes of the club shaft such that a node of each of the second and third flexural vibration modes occurs both at the club face and within the region underlying the golf club grip. Preferably, the stiffeners are made of a shape memory alloy that can be shrunk onto the outside surface of the shaft, then expanded to permit the position of the stiffeners to be adjusted to suit the boundary conditions imposed by the human user.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2002Publication date: October 30, 2003Applicant: KARSTEN MANUFACTURING CORP.Inventors: David E. Patent number: 6460747Abstract: A dual strap apparatus is disclosed for use with a golf bag of the type having a generally tubular body with an open top end and a closed bottom end. The dual strap apparatus includes a V-shaped shoulder strap having first and second portions that extend in opposed directions from a vertex. A first coupling strap is connected between the strap first portion and the body top end, and a second coupling strap is connected between the strap second portion and a location on the body intermediate the top and bottom ends of the body. In one embodiment of the dual strap apparatus, first and second hold-down straps are coupled to a common point on the vertex of the shoulder strap. The first hold-down strap is connected to the body top end, and the second hold-down strap is connected to the body at another location intermediate the body top and bottom ends. In another embodiment of the dual strap apparatus, a single hold-down strap is coupled to a point on the vertex of the shoulder strap.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2001Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: Gary L. Patent number: 6405595Abstract: An apparatus for determining the torsional stiffness of a shaft comprises a rigid frame having a collet for securing one end of the shaft to be measured the rigid frame. A second collet secures the opposite end of the shaft to an inertial weight, which is supported for rotation by a separate bearing so that the inertial weight introduces no axial load in the shaft being measured. The inertial weight has mounted to it a biaxial accelerometer, optical gate or other electronic means for measuring the torsional frequency of the shaft/weight combination. When the inertial weight is displaced from the initial static position and released, the inertial weight oscillates about its center of mass under the urging of the torsional stiffness of the shaft. A computer is programmed with the mass moment of inertia of the inertial weight and therefore is able to solve the differential equation of motion for the torsional spring constant of the shaft based on the frequency of oscillation.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1999Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventor: John W. Harrison

Patent number: 6315116Abstract: A golf bag having a seat assembly upon which a golfer may sit to rest. When the golfer desires to sit down, a specially configured storage pocket is opened, and a generally U-shaped support rod is moved from a retracted position to an extended position so that a foldable seat, preferably made of fabric, is in a taut stretched condition adjacent a top end of the storage pocket. The foldable seat is attached to a bight portion of the generally U-shaped support rod and is in a folded condition when the support rod is in its retracted position.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2000Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Karsten Manufacturing Corp.Inventors: Gregory M.
