Abstract: A client terminal connectable to a video distribution system (VDS) and a display device. The VDS provides program guide information to create a program guide that includes program guide entries for subscribed channels and non-subscribed channels. The client terminal includes a video distribution system interface to receive the program guide information, a display interface to display the program guide on the display device, a user interface to receive user input, and a terminal controller responsive to a subscription control program. In response to user input, the terminal controller selects a program guide entry. If the selected program guide entry is for a non-subscribed channel, the user is queried as to whether the user would like to subscribe to the selected channel. In response to user input indicating that the user would like to subscribe to the selected channel, a subscription request for the selected channel is transmitted to the VDS.

Abstract: A personal video recorder is provided for displaying a targeted advertisement on a display in conjunction with displaying of a broadcast stream on the display. A viewer profile of a viewer of the display is defined based on signals received by a controller indicating usage of a viewer control interface by the viewer, for example based on viewer reactions to a broadcast stream or to an advertisement. A targeted advertisement is selected from stored advertisements based on the viewer profile of the viewer of the display. The targeted advertisement is displayed on the display. The viewer profile is updated based on subsequent signals received by the controller indicating usage of the viewer control interface. The signals indicate viewer reactions, for example, a viewer reaction to a broadcast stream or a viewer reaction to an advertisement or a viewer purchase.

Abstract: Disclosed is a set-top box connectable to a display device and a video distribution network that includes a head end, the set-top box and a plurality of other set-top boxes that can store video programs. The set-top box includes a terminal controller responsive to user input and a video sharing program. The terminal controller responsive to the video sharing program displays a menu of available video programs identifying video programs stored at the plurality of other set-top boxes. Furthermore, the terminal controller responsive to user input and the video sharing program selects an available video program from the menu in response to user input, and requests the head end to command one of the plurality of other set-top boxes storing the selected available video program to transmit the selected available video program to the set-top box.

Abstract: A client terminal to provide a video program on demand to a client is connected to a video distribution system and a display device. The video distribution system (VDS) broadcasts a video program to the client terminal including an initial program segment (IPS) and a remaining program segment (RPS). The IPS is broadcast during a first broadcast time interval (FBTI) and the RPS is repetetively broadcast during a second broadcast time interval (SBTI). A terminal controller of the client terminal is responsive to a video control program. During the FBTI, the terminal controller records the IPS in a local memory. During the SBTI, the terminal controller selects the video program in response to a user input and displays the recorded IPS. Further, the terminal controller receives the RPS from the VDS and records it in the local memory. After displaying the recorded IPS, the terminal controller displays the recorded RPS.

Abstract: An audiovisual system for displaying an audiovisual advertisement to a user includes a storage subsystem adapted to receive and store audiovisual advertising segments and to retrieve and transmit stored advertising segments. The audiovisual system further includes a preference determination module coupled to the storage subsystem. The preference determination module is responsive to user input and to metadata to generate one or more user profiles. Each user profile is indicative of characteristic viewing preferences of a corresponding user and includes a time span preference parameter indicative of a preferred advertisement time span of the corresponding user. The audiovisual system further includes a system controller coupled to the storage subsystem.

Abstract: A method of transmitting programs from a source of programs to a user location divides a program into a plurality of program streams, wherein each program stream represents a temporal segment of the program. The method adds identification data to the plurality of program streams and multiplexes the plurality of program streams comprising the identification data into a transport stream. The transport stream is transmitted to a user location. The program represented by the plurality of program streams is transmitted in a reduced amount of time. The amount of time decreases with the number of program streams used.

A title list comprising the titles of at least one pay per view program is generated based on the schedule. The title list is provided to a display device for display to a user. A selection by title of the pay per view program to be received by the program receiver is received from the user. A potential transmission time of the pay per view program to be received by the program receiver is determined based on the at least one transmission time. Alternatively, selection of the pay per view program to be received by the program receiver may be based on user's preferences or a pre-selected list of titles.

Each original transport packet has a first predetermined number of bytes including video data bytes. A first circuit is configured to add a second predetermined number of bytes to each original transport packet to create a modified transport packet having a third predetermined number of bytes. A storage medium is addressable on sector boundaries, wherein each sector has a predetermined number of user data bytes different from the first predetermined number of bytes. The first byte in a modified transport packet aligns with a first user data byte in a sector after a first predetermined number of sectors following a previous alignment.

Abstract: The present invention may be regarded as a video recording system and method of enabling the recording of an external video data stream for a video program segment selected using an electronic program guide. The video recording system comprises a user interface that receives user input, a video input interface that receives the external video data stream for the selected video program segment, an isochronous interface connectable to an external rotating storage drive, and a video data management system. The video data management system uses the electronic program guide to select the video program segment in response to the user input. The video data management system recognizes connection of the external rotating storage drive to the video recording system and subsequently identifies the external rotating storage drive as available for video data storage.

Abstract: A digital video recorder (DVR) is disclosed for use with a monitor and a set top box (STB), the STB for demodulating program data from a program signal received over a communication channel and for generating a STB graphical user interface (GUI). The DVR comprises a local memory for storing the program data received from the STB and a plurality of program identifiers. The DVR further comprises a DVR controller for maintaining the plurality of program identifiers, and for communicating to the STB the plurality of program identifiers independent of when the STB demodulates the program data identified by the program identifiers. The STB is responsive to the plurality of program identifiers to modify at least one selected operation of the STB.

Abstract: A video system has an input port to receive video data that includes a plurality of premium contents and has an output port to couple to a video display for displaying video data selected by a viewer. A preference engine is coupled to the input port and is configured to track viewer selections of the video data and to create a viewer profile representing viewing preferences of the viewer. A promotion module, which is coupled to the preference engine and the output port, is responsive to the viewer profile to select at least one preferred promotion content from the plurality of premium contents, to cause the selected preferred promotion content to be stored and to cause the selected preferred promotion content to be displayed to entice the viewer to watch a premium content associated with the selected preferred promotion content.
