  • Patent number: 9238944
Abstract: This invention relates to a tri-cone bit for high RPM drilling applications, which comprises three head sections and three cones. Cutting elements are arranged on each cone. Upper parts of the three head sections are joined together to form a bit body, on which nozzle sockets are provided, and nozzles are installed in bores of the nozzle sockets. A bearing between the cones and the head sections is a composite roller-journal bearing which is formed by rollers and arc-shaped slides arranged in an alternating way, and a seal means for the bearing is of metal face type. The composite roller-journal bearing of the invention can withstand high RPM and high load, and also has a higher resistance to impact, thereby ensuring longer working life of the bearing under high RPM and medium-high WOB. The six-point gage protection structure enhances stability of the bit and reduces cutting element breakage caused by bit vibration.

  • Patent number: 8360175
Abstract: This invention relates to carbide inserts used on roller cone bits for oil and gas drilling applications as well as for other geological drilling applications, and more specifically, relates to the convex crested insert with deflected wedge surfaces. The insert comprises a cylindrical portion and a crest portion. Said crest portion is composed of a conical crest base, a top surface and two opposing wedge surfaces. Upper ends of the two wedge surfaces are merged smoothly with top surface of the insert. The specific feature of the structure is that top surface of the crest portion is convexed outwardly and forms a smooth curve surface which is higher in the middle and lowers down gradually to each end. Said two wedge surfaces are slant wedge surfaces, so that a width of the top surface and therefore a width of the insert crest are tapered from one end to the other. Advantages of this invention include: 1.

  • Publication number: 20100032215
Abstract: The present invention discloses a tri-cone drill bit comprising: three head sections with upper parts thereof jointed together to form a bit body, three cones rotatably mounted to lower ends of the head sections respectively, nozzle sockets designed on the bit body between respective head sections and each having a hole in which a nozzle is mounted, wherein gage cutters are mounted to an upper trailing side of each head O.D. surface to form a gage holding surface thereon, and a leading side of each head section is backwardly slanted as a whole. The design of gage surface at trailing sides of head sections increases the bit's stability, reduces lateral vibration and also reduces tendency of bit deflection in horizontal drilling applications and effective working life of the bit is improved. Backward slant of leading sides of head sections facilitates upward carrying of drilling cuttings and improves drilling efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7299887
Abstract: This invention relates to a single cone bit with offset axis and composite cones for oil and gas drilling, mining and other subterranean drilling operations. The bit consists of a head body and a cone. The cone section has a shape of composite cones. The outer circumference of the cone is composed of from back face of the cone to top of the cone an extended gage surface, an outer cone surface and a main cone surface. A plurality of cutting elements is mounted onto each cone surface. A head journal at lower end of the head body is for rotatablely connection with the cone. Between the axis of head journal and the axis of the bit, there is an offset value d along rotating direction of the cone. A gage pad is arranged on head body at a location opposite to the offset direction of the head journal. The gage pad is fitted with inserts or hardfaced with wear resistant alloy to prevent bit from whirling and prevent head body from being worn out and to ensure gage protection.

  • Patent number: 6176331
Abstract: A bearing seal for earth boring bits is disclosed. A supporting ring is located in a groove formed in the earth boring bit. An annular cavity between the outer circumference of the supporting ring and the bottom of the groove is connected with the outside. An O-ring made of rubber is provided in an annular space defined by the sidewalls of the groove, the inner circumference of the supporting ring and the cylindrical surface of the bearing shaft of the head section to form a seal comprising a radial and axial seal. Compressive deformation of the O-ring does not depend on the eccentric rotation of the cone. Therefore, the working life of the seal is increased and the compressive deformation is decreased, thus facilitating use at high rotating speeds.

  • Patent number: 6119797
Abstract: The invention discloses a single cone earth boring bit which is adapted to be used for boring in oil fields, mining and geological prospecting. The single cone earth boring bit is composed of a bit body (1), gauge blocks (2), active cutting gauge teeth (4), passive gauge teeth (3) and knobby cone (6) etc. On the knobby cone (6), there are inserted wear-resistant teeth intermittently or successively, so as to make the wear resistance of the bit cutting system to be matched with the service life of the bearing. At the same time, gauge blocks (2) are provided on the bit body which may be directly made on or welded to the bit body. On the gauge blocks (2), there are inserted common carbide or wear-resistant active cutting gauge teeth (4) and the passive gauge teeth (3) to enhance the gauge-protecting effect of the bit. Such a single cone earth boring bit can significantly increase the footage of the bit and reduce the cost for drilling.
