  • Patent number: 5735481
Abstract: A device for winding a continuous strip of roll-fed material, reeled off a mother roll, sequentially onto several winding tubes. The winding tubes are mounted on rolling spindles provided on a rotatable carrier mount that permits timed angular rotation of the winding tubes through various stations in which the winding tubes are processed and wound with material. The rolling spindles are preferably mounted at essentially identical angular distances. Two drive units drive the rolling spindles individually or in groups, so that neighboring rolling spindles are operated by different drives. Accordingly, the rotational speeds of winding tubes sequentially entering a winding station may be independently controlled. The winding device thus can achieve greater winding speeds than other prior art winding devices. A glue application device that applies glue helically around the winding tubes is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5439366
Abstract: A safety device for the roll space within a calender or other roll machine is disclosed. The rolls when rotating, excite oscillations in the beam at the resonant frequency of the beam. This can occur during start-up or during normal operation. The safety device of the present invention comprises a beam and additional mass that is oscillatorily suspended from the beam in order to reduce the amplitude of the beam oscillations at the beam resonant frequency. In addition, a damping element between additional mass and the beam is used to reduce any undesired oscillations due to newly created resonant frequencies introduced into the system.

  • Patent number: 5289766
Abstract: Apparatus for cooling the end portions of a calender roll which has an elastic layer adjacent its peripheral surface and wherein the central portion of the peripheral surface is overlapped by a running web of paper or other material when the calender is in use. The width of the non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface of the roll varies when a web having a first width is followed by a web having a different second width. This could lead to damage to the roll at the non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface as a result of overheating by an adjacent rotary component of the calender. The end portions of the roll are cooled by discrete adjustable cooling devices which are movable along the respective non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface in parallelism with the axis of the roll and each of which shares movements with a monitoring device which is to be maintained in a selected position relative to the adjacent marginal portion of a running web.

  • Patent number: 5241903
Abstract: A safety guard for the nip of two neighboring rolls in a calender has an elongated support which is located in front of the nip and has two elongated strip-shaped barriers each adjacent but spaced apart from the peripheral surface of one of the rolls. The support is mounted on the bearings for one of the rolls for pivotal movement about an axis which is parallel to the nip and carries cams which are biased against rollers on the bearings for the other roll by one or more reversible motors. If the bearings for one of the rolls are moved relative to the bearings for the other roll, the cams move along the respective rolls and/or vice versa, whereby the orientation of the support and of the barriers thereon is changed so that the width of the clearances between the barriers and the peripheral surfaces of the adjacent rolls does not exceed a maximum permissible value such as would enable a careless operator to introduce a finger into the nip.

  • Patent number: 5208956
Abstract: A controlled deflection roll for use in calenders and like machines has a non-rotatable carrier for a hollow cylindrical shell the end portions of which are rotatable on bearings and the central portion of which surrounds hydraulically operated shell deforming elements. A first hydraulic circuit is provided to supply heated oil to the deforming elements, and a second hydraulic circuit serves to feed lubricant to the bearings. The two circuits are separated from each other by thermal barriers which are installed between the shell and the carrier intermediate the deforming elements and the bearings. Valves and/or flow restrictors are provided in the second circuit to vary the rate of feed of lubricant to and/or the flow of lubricant from the bearings. This renders it possible to establish a desired temperature profile along the full length of the peripheral surface of the shell.

  • Patent number: 5206978
Abstract: A roll for use in a calender or a like machine has a carrier which is surrounded by a flexible cylindrical shell. One or more hydrostatic displacing units are installed between the carrier and the shell to deform, when necessary, one or more selected portions of the shell. Each displacing unit has a bearing element with an external surface which is closely adjacent the internal surface of the shell and has one or more pockets for reception of a heated pressurized hydraulic fluid. Each bearing element has a second surface which faces away from the external surface, and the respective displacing unit further comprises one or more plenum chambers adjacent the second surface of the bearing element. The pocket or pockets of the bearing element receive heated fluid from a first source, and the plenum chamber or chambers of the bearing element receive compressed oil or another hydraulic fluid from a second source which can include one or more parts of the first source or vice versa.

  • Patent number: 5111564
Abstract: A calender roll wherein a cylindrical shell is rotatably mounted on a stationary carrier by way of bearings which are disposed in the end portions of the shell. • Patent number: 5033317
Abstract: The cylindrical internal surfaces of inner races of antifriction bearings between the end portions of a deformable shell and the stationary carrier for the shell in a roll for use in calenders surround with some clearance the adjacent cylindrical external surfaces of the carrier. The magnitude of stresses between the pairs of internal and external surfaces is monitored by several sensors at least some of which have pockets machined into the respective internal and/or external surface. The pockets receive a pressurized hydraulic fluid which leaks along paths defined by the respective pair of surfaces to be collected in a tank. An evaluating system monitors the pressure in the pockets and serves to regulate the pressure of supplied fluid and/or the hydrostatic or other supporting elements between the carrier and the shell.
