  • Patent number: 4487247
Abstract: A thin walled chill mould is provided with several cooling chambers by which the intensity of cooling can be varied during casting. During pouring, cooling of the lowermost chamber is commenced first and with low intensity. As filling continues, cooling by the other cooling chambers is commenced successively and at increasing intensities. After filling is complete, cooling is continued at these different intensities until the mould has been closed and tilted to the horizontal. Thereafter cooling is continued at maximum intensity in all chambers while the mould is rotated about its longitudinal axis. The method and the chill mould are provided particularly for the manufacture of long, slender ingots, billets or the like, particularly for the manufacture of seamless tubes. Corresponding control of the cooling operation avoids fissures and facilitates ejection of the ingot from the chill mould.

  • Patent number: 4480515
Abstract: Apparatus for laterally ejecting elongate articles, such as tube lengths, from a channel defined by a roller bed, the channel extending beyond a flying saw for severing continuous lengths into said elongate articles, said apparatus being operated by a signal generator fitted to the flying saw so that an ejection operation is initiated by an optional delay after completion of a severing operation. Operation is not impaired in the event of the tube being fractured during the rolling operation, since the ejection operation takes place in timed relation to the severing operation and does not depend on detection of the presence or absence of tube ends.

  • Patent number: 4430875
Abstract: In a method of rolling tubes in a stretch-reducing rolling mill having a group drive in which the elongation, and therefore the tension is increased by increasing the speed of an auxiliary drive motor relative to that of a main drive motor, the length of the trailing "thickened end", which must be rejected as scrap, is reduced by increasing the elongation from the point in time at which the start of the trailing end portion of the tube reaches the last stand. This trailing end portion is that portion which receives a larger wall thickness than the central portion of the tube as a result of the reduced tension exerted in the trailing end portion of prior art practices. The start of this trailing end portion can be predicted from experience or by rolling a sample tube without subjecting its trailing end portion to the said increased elongation and measuring the wall thickness at the trailing end portion of the sample tube.

  • Patent number: 4408476
Abstract: A rolling line for billets, bars, wire rod or the like, e.g. a roughing line has one or more rolling stands each having three or more driven rolls which are adjustable towards and away from the work material by a worm drive and a screw. The rolls are brought progressively closer together before each pass of the work material, whose cross section is thereby reduced with corresponding elongation. The direction of rotation of the rolls is reversed between each pass, unless two stands for rolling in opposite directions are provided in which case it is possible for the stands to be continuously driven but alternately operative. The work material is turned about its axis through half a roll pitch angle between each pass.

  • Patent number: 4323971
Abstract: An adjustment device is provided for regulating the total degree of drawing in a multi-stand stretch reduction rolling mill for the stretch reduction of tube having a digital unit which calculates intermittently the desired or theoretical stretchings (.lambda. theor.) from the entering and exiting wall thicknesses (S.sub.o, S) and the external diameters (D.sub.o,D) of both the actual entering and desired finished tube sections and continuously the actual stretchings (.lambda. act.) from the entrance and exit speeds (V.sub.o,V) of the tube, and a regulator adjusting the roll r.p.m.'s as a function of the differences in theoretical and actual stretchings (.DELTA..lambda.).

  • Patent number: 4320646
Abstract: A cooling conveyor arrangement for rolled wire or wire rod which has left a water cooler has a loop-forming device which deposits the wire in overlapping loops on an air-cooling conveyor. To obtain a shorter cooling path, which is desirable for high-grade steels to reduce the rate of cooling, the loops fall onto a conveyor portion and are carried by a conveyor portion to a coil-forming station where the loops are collected. To obtain a longer cooling path a removable conveyor portion is switched into place so that the loops are carried along a conveyor portion to an opening where they fall onto a conveyor portion. A conveyor portion is swung into alignment with the portion carrying the loops to feed the loops to the coil-forming station.

  • Patent number: 4308740
Abstract: In the rolling of wire or rod in a rolling line having a roughing or intermediate block whose rolling stands have non-adjustable rolls except for those at the exit end of the block, the rolls of the non-adjustable stands can be re-used at least once in the same stand location after being re-conditioned by reconditioning all the rolls defining a first series of sizing passes so as to form a second series of sizing passes whose individual sizes are larger than those of the first series. The change in dimensions of a given sizing pass as a result of reconditioning is less than the difference between the dimensions of that sizing pass after reconditioning (i.e. of the second series ) and the dimensions of the immediately preceding sizing pass before reconditioning (i.e. of the first series). Thus, after a second or subsequent reconditioning the rolls of a given stand are transferred to the immediately preceding stand for re-use to define the first series of sizing passes.

  • Patent number: 4277967
Abstract: The rollers of a push bench for the production of tubular blooms are axially displaceably journalled on respective spindles so that the rollers are centered by the bloom. For machining the working surfaces of the rollers, the rollers, or their shafts to which they are fixed, can be axially locked in position and the roller shaft has a releasable coupling for coupling the roller shaft to a drive motor or drive shaft, whereby all the rollers can be machined simultaneously without removing them from the stand.
