Patent number: 7172775Abstract: A method for predicting late fermentation production of diacetyl in a brewing process comprises determining the ratio of FAN (free amino nitrogen content) to sugar (fermentable) to specific gravity in an initial wort composition. In addition there is provided a process for preventing incipient late fermentation production of diacetyl in a brewing process, comprising measuring and variously adjusting the initial FAN, sugar and specific gravity of the wort such that the ratio [ f . sugar ? ( g / L ) ] initial [ FAN ? ( g / L ) ] initial ? [ Gravity ? ( °P ) ] initial , for the adjusted wort has a value of 37 or less.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2002Date of Patent: February 6, 2007Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventors: Erin Ellice Petersen, Argyrios Margaritis, Robert Joseph Stewart, Phyllis Heather Pilkington, Michael J. Patent number: 7115290Abstract: An improved process for the production of a hopped malt beer wherein a processing liquid containing riboflavin is hopped to form the desired beverage. The improvement comprises subjecting that processing liquid to an effective amount of actinic radiation of a wavelength adapted to decompose the riboflavin and thereby reduce the amount thereof, whereby a beer having enhanced light stability is obtained.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2003Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventors: Joseph Raymond Luc Bordeleau, David John Hastings, Michael Jerome McGarrity

Patent number: 7086578Abstract: A secondary beverage carton which has two opposing non-rectangular, preferably triangular, side walls. The carton has at least one coincident acute angle. The side walls are connected by end walls. Preferably one end wall has a can access panel which is severable to provide an opening for the cans.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2003Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventors: Jeremy Peter Tallevi, Keith Lawrence Goodfellow

Patent number: 6822181Abstract: The present invention provides a device and method for selectively removing an article from a stream or line of similar articles travelling in a pathway on a transport system such as a conveyor. The invention utilizes a synchronous electric motor which, in response to a signal to reject a specific article in the stream, rotates an article-contacting member or paddle into the path of the stream of articles travelling along the pathway whereby it contacts and smoothly removes that article from the stream. The use of a synchronous motor to effect the rotation of the paddle is very important to the present invention.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2001Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventor: Fredrick L. Publication number: 20040007479Abstract: A bottle handling device for assisting in inserting a number of similar sized bottles into a secondary container, such as a partitionless beer carton. The device comprises a frame which, when inserted into the empty carton, provides a number of similar sized cells or compartments equal to the number of bottles which would completely fill the carton. The frame is maintained by support means above the shoulders of the bottles when located in the carton. Each bottle is inserted into, and its main body passes through, the frame until the bottle sits on the carton floor, the walls of each cell preventing a bottle in that cell from toppling over and hindering the insertion of further bottles and completion of filling of the carton. Upon completion and filling of the carton, the device is readily removed for reuse and the bottles are maintained in their upright condition by contacting adjacent bottles and the carton walls.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 16, 2003Publication date: January 15, 2004Applicant: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventors: Bradley John Mahood, Edward Stanley James Miziolek, Robert G. Patent number: 6666331Abstract: A paperboard partitionless carrier is provided for containing filled beverage bottles. The carrier comprises a pair of spaced side walls joined by a pair of end walls to form a box structure which, in combination with a base, forms a tray which supports the bottles. The carrier also has bottle restraining means overlying and contacting the sealed necks of the bottles thereby preventing the bottles being opened and the bottles being extracted from the carrier without the material forming the carrier being visibly interfered with.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2001Date of Patent: December 23, 2003Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventor: Michael John Archer

Patent number: 6616780Abstract: A method and a device are disclosed for supplying a plurality of labels to a labeling device. The device includes a carton containing a stack of labels. The labels are packaged in the carton with the top ends of the labels adjacent to a bottom wall of the carton and the bottom ends of the labels are positioned at an open top end of the carton. A feed carriage of the labeling device is filled by inverting and positioning the carton on the feed carriage with the open end facing the bottom wall of the feed carriage. The carton is then removed from the feed carriage, leaving the labels on the feed carriage in an upright position. The feed carriage is then delivered to the labeling device for applying the labels to the containers.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2000Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Labatt Brewing Company LimitedInventor: Bradley J.
