Patent number: 7815761Abstract: A method and apparatus enables linered label applicators to use labels on thin liners. Linered labels comprise a composite of an elongate sheet of thin or light-weight temporary liner having a precut label adhered to a low adhesion surface. The cut-out labels on the liner are fed into the linered label applicator. The use of support mechanisms other then vacuum application on rollers enables the use of thinner liner sheets on labels. A die head for cutting or perforating labels comprising adhesive on label stock comprising a die head having at least 80% of its outer surface comprising flat areas between cutting edges, multiple cutting edges on the outer surface, and an internal volume in the die head, the internal volume for carrying coolant liquid into and out of the volume so as to cool the outer surface of the die head when the coolant temperature is at least 10° C. cooler than the outer surface of the die head.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2006Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Advanced Label Systems, Inc.Inventor: Robert Phillips

Publication number: 20030089452Abstract: A method and apparatus useful in the application of linerless labels to surfaces of elements is provided in a methodology so that conventional linered label applicators can be used with linerless labels. A source of linerless labels is provided comprising a composite of an elongate sheet of reusable, temporary liner having adhered to a low adhesion surface of said reusable, temporary liner an adhesive face of a precut linerless label, the composite possibly being in a roll.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2001Publication date: May 15, 2003Applicant: Advanced Label Systems, Inc.Inventors: Thomas E. Patent number: 6294038Abstract: A method, module and apparatus useful in the application of linerless labels to surfaces of elements is provided in a methodology so that conventional linered label applicators can be used with linerless labels. A source of linerless labels is provided comprising a composite of an elongate sheet of reusable, temporary liner having adhered to a low adhesion surface of the reusable, temporary liner an adhesive face of a cut linerless label, the composite being rolled into a roll. The source of linerless labels is used in a method for enabling a linered label applicator to accept linerless label sheet for application to the surface of elements comprising associating a source of precut linerless labels on a roll of reusable, temporary liner sheet to a linered label applicator so that a composite of: a) the reusable, temporary liner sheet and b) cut-out linerless labels is fed into the linered label applicator where linered label is normally directed into the linered label applicator.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1999Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: Advanced Label Systems, Inc.Inventor: Gerald A. Patent number: 6206071Abstract: A module for adapting an apparatus which strips a liner from labels and applies the labels to substrates, said module enabling said apparatus to apply linerless labels, said module comprising: a source of linerless label sheet, a source of liner sheet, a roll for guiding said linerless label sheet after removal from said source of linerless label sheet, a die cutter and an anvil roller defining an area through which said linerless label sheet moves between said die cutter and anvil roller to_form cut-out linerless labels, a laminator roller adjacent said anvil roller defining an area between said anvil roller and said laminator roller through which both the liner and cut-out linerless labels from said linerless label sheet move between said anvil roller and said laminator roller to form a temporary support of said liner for said cut-out linerless labels, and a means positioned with respect to the apparatus that strips a liner from labels and applies the labels to substrates to feed the cut-out linerless labelType: GrantFiled: August 5, 1998Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Advanced Label Systems, Inc.Inventors: Gerald A. Patent number: 6123796Abstract: A combination of a preprinted pressure sensitive label and an electronic article security system target is provided, preferably as a supply of labels on a backing material web with the target between. The labels preferably extend about at least about 1/8th inch around the edge of the target to directly adhere to the products. Articles may be selectively marked with targets so concealed to deter theft with fewer targets. The combinations may be formed by applying first the target, then the label, to the article. Preferably, label and target combinations are supplied on a web and are then applied to the products. Combination label and target supplies may be formed by separating the preprinted labels from their backing material webs, applying the targets to either the label or the backing material, and then combining the label with either the same backing material web or a different one.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1998Date of Patent: September 26, 2000Assignee: Superior Label Systems, Inc.Inventors: John A. Patent number: 6087075Abstract: A tamper-evident label includes two parts that are separated from each other when an article to which they are attached is opened. The two parts have matching surface relief patterns secured to each other at an interface, and the indexes of refraction of the parts are substantially equal such that the patterns have no optical effect when attached to each other. When the two parts are separated, however, the patterns generate an image drawing attention to their separation. The patterns are preferably holographic.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1997Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: Label Systems, Inc.Inventors: Edward J. Kler, David W. Robbins, Robert R. Carey

Patent number: 5284688Abstract: A novel method of making a laminated label construction is provided which involves (1) providing a temporary carrier having a first relatively strong release surface and a second relatively weak release surface on opposite sides thereof, (2) forming a heat sealable lacquer on said first release surface so as to form a label face film having a predetermined edge configuration, (3) forming indicia on at least one selected portion of said label face film (in the case where printed labels are desired), and (4) forming a layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive in overlying bonded relationship with the indicia (when present) and the protective lacquer. The pressure-sensitive adhesive has lateral dimensions less than those of the label face film. The lacquer face film comprises at least one heat-activatable ingredient that becomes tacky when heated and thereby provides heat-sealing properties.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1992Date of Patent: February 8, 1994Assignee: Unique Label Systems, Inc.Inventor: Norman A. Patent number: 4935288Abstract: A composition applied as a coating to material intended to be utilized as a label for displaying pricing, and other information, as in the supermarket, the composition including a solution of approximately 70% acrylic, or an overprint varnish, a silica flatting agent included at about 3% by weight, an alcohol solvent included at approximately 17% to 18% by weight, and an ester solvent at approximately 9% to 10% by weight. In alternative coating, such as for use in conjunction with differing printers, a water base solution must be employed, and this includes a solution of a 50% water based acrylic, having added to it approximately 25% by weight of water, and 25% by weight of extending varnish. The composition is applied to the label material by gravure roll, or any other flexographic printing process, dried, and then shipped to the supermarket or its headquarters wherein the label material can be cut, and printed upon one of the laser printers with the aforementioned data, for ready application.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1987Date of Patent: June 19, 1990Assignee: American Label Systems, Inc.Inventors: Lewis R.
