    Abstract: A caliper brake assembly comprising a pair of pivotal caliper arms operatively connected to a remote brake lever via a double type control cable consisting of an inner cable and an outer cable, a brake shoe mounted to a lower end of each of the caliper arms, a return spring for urging each of the caliper arms to take its normal release position when the brake lever is in its rest position, the pair of caliper arms being arranged so as to bring the brake shoes into braking contact with the bicycle wheel when the brake lever is operated to pull the inner cable, wherein at least one of the pair of caliper arms has an auxiliary braking element adapted to automatically come into braking contact with the bicycle wheel when the inner cable is freed from tension.

    Abstract: A variable-speed bicycle comprises a multi-stage freewheel assembly with two or three sprockets mounted on a rear wheel hub, a rear derailleur is adapted to cooperate with the freewheel assembly for switching over a chain from one sprocket onto another, and an action converter is provided for converting a tension force of one direction into a thrust force of a transverse direction thereto. The derailleur comprising a horizontal support shaft mounted to a bracket, a tensioner mounted on the shaft, and a helical spring surrounding the shaft and interposed between the tensioner and the bracket. The tensioner is axially slidable on the shaft as well as rotatable about the shaft under the function of the spring, the action converter comprising a push arm disposed operatively in contact with the tensioner for imparting the thrust force thereto, all of the above constituent elements are housed within a gear case.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a bicycle speed change lever comprising a support shaft secured to a mounting member, a lever body pivotally mounted on the support shaft, and a click plate disposed adjacent the lever body so as to be slightly movable in opposite directions about the support shaft for presenting the alternative of two positional phases. A plurality of spaced circular holes are formed in the click plate and aligned in an arc of a circle, a steel ball is retained between a base portion of the lever body and the click plate so as to be disengageable with any one of the plurality of circular holes, and a phase converting mechanism for converting the positional phases of the click plate from one phase to the other and vice versa. The phase converting mechanism including an engaging member formed with the click plate and a switching member secured to the mounting member which cooperate to effect the phase converting only when the lever body is pivotally moved in a reverse direction.
