  • Patent number: 5847348
Abstract: A tool adaptor which can be used with an electrode on electrical discharge machine having a current source and a C-axis controller for selectively rotating the electrode. The tool adaptor includes a tool holder for selectively and releasably securing the tool adaptor to said C-axis controller, a jig plate adapted for securing the electrode, an isolating assembly, including a spacer, interposed between the tool holder and the jig plate for preventing effective electrical and/or thermal communication between the jig plate and the tool holder. The tool adaptor also can include an electrical assembly for establishing and maintaining electrical communication between the jig plate and the current source, so that the tool adaptor is configured to permit selective rotational movement of the electrode. The electrical assembly may include a connector adapted for being selectively mountable around the C-axis controller, and being in electrical communication with the current source, and a shank (e.g.

  • Patent number: 5800252
Abstract: An improved honing method and device connected to a source of pressurized fluid for machining a wall of a bore hole or similar interior of a workpiece. The honing device includes a tool mandrel connected in a cantilevered arrangement to a machine for rotating machining operations. A rigid honing member is secured to the tool mandrel, and configured such that the effective diameter of the substantially rigid abrasive outer surface of the honing member can be uniformly and precisely varied in a radial direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the tool in response to pressure on the interior surface of the honing member. A fluid distribution system formed in the tool mandrel in a predetermined arrangement is in fluid communication with the source of pressurized fluid, and includes a pressure chamber that is configured to apply fluid pressure to the interior surface of the honing member.

  • Patent number: 5775853
Abstract: An improved device and method for use in machining a workpiece, which includes a tool body with a machining tool having two machining surface, wherein one of the machining surfaces is being selectively movable between a retracted position and an extended position. A supporting mechanism is sized and configured to substantially restrict movement of the machining tool relative to the tool body while the one machining surface is positioned in the retracted position. Preferably, the supporting mechanism includes an interior surface having a frustoconical-shaped tapered configuration, and the reciprocable machining surface has an engageable surface sized and configured to be frictionally engaged against the interior surface. In a preferred embodiment, the interior surface has an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the tool body from about 20 to about 50 degrees, and more preferably about 40 degrees.

  • Patent number: 5678962
Abstract: A unitary bore forming and threading tool for producing a variety threaded bores having chamfers and counterbores without a need for tool changes. The improved took preferably includes a shaft of predetermined axial length and having proximal and distal ends, a shank located adjacent the proximal end, a holemaking element located adjacent the distal end, and a threadmill portion located axially between the bit and the shank. The holemaking element further includes a chamfering surface and an end cutting surface. The disclosed tool and method enable creation of a variety of bores such as chamfers, counterbores, and threaded bores by producing bore portions of selectively determined distinct diameters by sequentially axially feeding the tool into the workpiece along distinct tool paths without changing tools. If desired, one or more of the bore portions can be threaded with the threadmill by moving the threadmill in a selectively determined helical or nonhelical path.
