    Abstract: A process is proposed for producing a protective layer on workpieces made, for example, from carbon composite material, for use at temperatures above 1000.degree. C. In accordance with the invention, a comminuted solids mixture with refractory ceramic powder articles, e.g., of carbides, nitrides and/or silicides, preferably from groups III, IV and/or VIb of the periodic table, and with at least one compound of the general elemental composition Me.sub.x B.sub.z, where Me represents one of the elements Si, Al, Zr, Ti, Hf or Y, and x and z each represent a number from 1 to 6, and optionally, in addition, with at least one already formed glass with the following general oxidic composition: Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --B.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SiO.sub.2 --RO, where RO represents MgO, CaO or BaO, is dispersed in a liquid carrier system, deposited on free surfaces of a workpiece, and heated together with the workpiece briefly with air access to a maximum temperature of 1200.degree. C.

    Abstract: A fastening or connecting device for fiber-reinforced ceramics to be used in high temperature ranges is in the form of a screw that is manufactured of a ceramic material in the shape of a plate having fiber layers with fibers oriented parallel to the surface of the plate. The plate thickness is less than 90% of the core diameter of the thread so that upon cutting a thread a discontinuous thread results. The bore of a complementary nut is provided with a continuous inner thread that cuts through the fiber layers at a right angle.

    Abstract: In a hot gas or Stirling engine conventional regenerators for engines with a large displacement, designed for axially directed flow and usually lacking sufficient mechanical strength with respect to the high working gas pressures, have been replaced by radial flow regenerators. In the respective receiving spaces, the radial flow regenerators are surrounded externally and internally by an annular duct for the supply and discharge of the working gas. Thus, it is possible to ensure a larger flow area for the working gas and to design the engine with the desired mechanical strength.

    Abstract: In the method for the production of a hip joint prosthesis shank two shells are produced with unidirectional fibers, which extend in the longitudinal direction of the shank and prior to curing of matrix material therein the components are assembled so that during the later curing stage there is an intimate engagement produced between the components. The fibers are wound on a shape, which has the desired form of the shell, by winding a single fiber lengthwise of the form and reversing the fiber at the ends of the form. The winding is carried out by pulling the fiber taut along the length of the form and reversing the fiber at the ends on pins and relatively turning the form and the fiber after completing the winding of the fiber over the length of the form. The core may be produced by introducing foaming or liquid material into the cavity formed by the shells.

    Abstract: A thermally insulating lining for the housing of the heater system ensures that on the outside of the heater system only low temperatures are reached which are not dangerous to operators in the vicinity of the engine. Combustion air duct means between an air preheater and a burner is formed by a large number of tubes arranged alongside each other in at least one row and along an inside wall of the combustion chamber. These tubes ensure that the flow state remains satisfactory and constant and they are substantially more durable than sheet metal duct means as used hitherto.
