Patent number: 5832984Abstract: Molten steel is poured into a water cooled continuous casting mold in which the steel solidifies partially with the formation of a strand having a length and a peripheral shell. The strand has a cross-sectional surface area with one of a round shape, an oval shape and a polygonal shape having more than four sides. Additionally, the strand has a minimum circumference of 200 mm. The cross-sectional surface area of the strand leaving the mold is then reduced using rolls before the strand fully solidifies. The reducing includes deforming the strand into a polygonal shape having at least four corners while maintaining the circumference as well as the length of the strand at the peripheral shell constant.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1996Date of Patent: November 10, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann AktiegesellschaftInventors: Fritz-Peter Pleschiutschnigg, Lothar Parschat, Dieter Stalleicken, Winfried Binder, Klaus Bruckner, Ingo von Hagen, Werner Rahmfeld

Patent number: 5791399Abstract: The invention concerns a method for heating a metal melt, in particular molten steel covered with a casting powder, introduced via a submerged outlet into an ingot mould of a continuous casting plant. In order to ensure uniform heat dissipation over the ingot mould and constant frictional forces between the latter and the casting shell, the heat energy is introduced at given points into the surface of the melt bath and the heat energy point on the surface of the melt bath is brought to a predetermined line.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1996Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann AktiegesellschaftInventor: Ewald Feuerstacke

Patent number: 5778718Abstract: A process for rolling tubes, in which two grooved rolls mounted opposite one another in a roll stand are moved back and forth, i.e., reciprocated, on tube-shaped rolling material, which is arranged on a tapered rolling mandrel supported in the axial direction by a mandrel bar. The rotary-driven rolls have, on their circumferential surfaces, narrowing work grooves matching in shape to the tapered rolling mandrel, which roll down the rolling material on the rolling mandrel. At the ends of the work passes the rolls release the rolling material at the two dead centers of the roll stand path so as to assist in the advancement and rotation of the rolling material. According to the invention, the tube-shaped rolling material and the rolling mandrel are driven asynchronously in the same rotational direction at different rotational speeds.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1997Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann AktiegesellschaftInventors: Horst Stinnertz, Michael Baensch

Patent number: 5425229Abstract: The energy contained in the blast furnace gas of a shaft furnace, particularly in the blast furnace gas of a cupola furnace, is utilized by wet cleaning the blast furnace waste gas as it emerges from the shaft furnace. The pre-treated blast furnace gas is then fed to a fine-dust filter for purification. Blast furnace gas entering the fine-dust filter is heated to the dew point by mixing it with a partial flow of purified gas branched off and heated upon exiting the fine-dust filter. Another portion of the purified gas mixture is fed to a gas turbine.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1994Date of Patent: June 20, 1995Assignee: Mannesmann AktiegesellschaftInventors: Paul van Ackeren, Karl-Heinz Schmitz
