    Abstract: One or more templates are provided for circulating fluids in a main well bore and for drilling and completing at least one offset well bore from the main well bore. Each template has a body, an inlet leg, a main outlet leg, and an offset outlet leg. A straddle assembly is mounted in the template to configure the template for fluid circulation. The straddle assembly, in cooperation with the inlet and main outlet legs, effects a downhole flow path which directs fluids from the inlet leg through body of the template and out the main outlet leg, bypassing the offset outlet leg. The straddle assembly is distally displaced from the template to reconfigure the template for drilling. A diverter is placed in the body of the template upon displacement of the straddle assembly to define a drill string path from the inlet leg to the offset outlet leg. The offset well bore is drilled by conveying a drill string through the drill string path.

    Abstract: A process is provided for converting an alkane to an oxygenated product by passing an alkane gas over a first fixed bed containing a higher valence bromide salt to produce an alkyl bromide, a hydrobromic acid, and a lower valence bromide salt. The alkyl bromide and hydrobromic acid are conveyed as a gas to a second fixed bed containing a metal oxide and are passed over the second fixed bed to produce the first bromide salt and the oxygenated product. The metal oxide in the second fixed bed is regenerated by passing oxygen over the second fixed bed producing the metal oxide and bromine. The bromine is conveyed as a gas from the second fixed bed to the first fixed bed. The first bromide salt of the first fixed bed is regenerated by passing the bromine over the first fixed bed producing the first bromide salt.

The system can also include a transmitter device configured to move through the metal tubular emitting the electromagnetic signals, an antenna on the outside of the non magnetic metal section configured to detect the electromagnetic signals, and a receiver-control circuit configured to generate control signals responsive to the electromagnetic signals.

An antenna is electrically connected to a responding device, such as a radio frequency identification device, and this assembly is connected to an asset. The antenna may be positioned about the exterior and/or the interior of the asset and significantly increases the range of signals that may be received and/or broadcast by the responding device. A transceiver may accordingly be positioned a greater distance from the asset without regard to the orientation of the asset and still permit communication between the transceiver and the responding device. In this manner, information that specifically identifies the asset may be compiled in a data base so as to maintain an accurate history of the usage of such assets as tubulars, equipment, tool and/or devices.

A suitable signal, such as a hydraulic, electric or wave signal, is transported to the perforating gun assembly so as to detonate one or more explosive charges in the perforating gun assembly which are aimed toward the casing. At least one wall in the casing is perforated thereby establishing fluid communication through the wall of the casing. Usually, cement surrounding the casing and a subterranean formation surrounding the casing are also perforated to establish fluid communication between the formation and the interior of the casing.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining position in a pipe provides for the precise determination of location and associated characteristics of each pipe joint of a well, cross country pipeline or other fluid transmission line. The system includes a passive or active radio identification device at each joint in the pipe or casing string. The devices are preferably sealed within the resilient seal positioned between each pipe or casing joint. A pipeline tool includes a radio transmitter and receiver, with the transmitter transmitting on a frequency selected for resonating the identification devices. The resonant response of each device is detected by a receiver in the pipeline tool, with the response transmitted to the surface via the wireline to which the tool is connected. Alternatively, the tool may include storage information means until the tool can be recovered from the well or pipe.

    Abstract: A process for removing sulfur from a hydrocarbon employs a solid membrane. A feed stream is provided containing a feed liquid hydrocarbon and a feed sulfur species and a sweep stream is provided containing a sweep liquid hydrocarbon. A relatively large quantity of the feed stream is conveyed past one side of the solid membrane, while a relatively small quantity of the sweep stream is conveyed past the opposite side of the solid membrane. The feed sulfur species is transported in a permeate from the feed stream through the solid membrane to the sweep stream. As a result, the feed stream is converted to a relatively large quantity of a substantially sulfur-free reject stream containing a primary hydrocarbon product, while the sweep stream combines with the permeate to produce a relatively small quantity of a sulfur-enriched stream, which is amenable to further processing.

    Abstract: A transport process for a wet gas employs a subsea heat exchanger having first and second flowpaths separated by a heat transfer surface. A cooler heat transfer medium is conveyed through the first flowpath in a liquid phase while a warmer hydrocarbon stream having a gaseous hydrocarbon phase and a liquid aqueous phase is conveyed through the second flowpath, which cools the hydrocarbon stream and heats the heat transfer medium. The heat transfer medium is converted by heating to a vapor phase, which is conveyed to a passive condenser associated with the subsea heat exchanger. The ambient temperature of the sea water submersing the condenser cools the heat transfer medium and restores it to the liquid phase for reuse in the heat exchanger. A portion of the hydrocarbon stream is converted by cooling to a plurality of solid gas hydrate particles while a solid particle medium entrained within the hydrocarbon stream prevents the build-up of gas hydrate particles in the second flowpath.

The cross-sectional frame sections are horizontally positioned at periodic intervals along the height of the jacket and each has a plurality of members, which interconnect the four outside legs and are part of the exterior framing. The exterior framing in total defines an integral launch box for the jacket. A plurality of perpendicularly oriented conductors pass through each cross-sectional frame from the base to the top of the jacket and conductor guides connected to the respective frame sections slidably engage the conductors to laterally support them.

The buoyant element interacts with the lo drilling fluid in the well bore to provide buoyancy for the drill pipe. The buoyant drill pipe can be used to construct a drilling system, and to perform a drilling method for an extended reach well bore having a horizontal or inclined segment. During drilling, the buoyant element interacts with the drilling fluid in the horizontal or inclined segment, such that a weight of the drill pipe, a torque required to rotate the drill pipe, and torsional stresses on the drill pipe are reduced.

    Abstract: A process for restoring the damaged bottom of a storage tank. The process is initiated by preparing a slurry containing unconsolidated solids and a gelation solution. The gelation solution includes an aqueous liquid solvent, a crosslinkable polymer, and a crosslinking agent. The slurry is placed on the internal bottom surface of the storage tank in a sufficient volume to fully cover the surface. The gelation solution is then gelled substantially to completion in the storage tank to form a gel that binds the unconsolidated solids and converts the slurry into a hardened conglomeration. The hardened conglomeration provides a coat over the internal bottom surface of the storage tank to prevent further damage to the bottom of the tank and leakage therethrough.

    Abstract: A process is provided for converting a multi-phase fluid stream having an initial gas phase and an initial liquid phase to a gas hydrate slurry. The initial liquid phase includes an initial water and the initial gas phase includes a hydrocarbon gas. An inert solid particle medium is entrained in the multi-phase fluid stream to form a fluidizable mixture which is conveyed through the interior of a heat transfer tube enclosed within a shell. A heat transfer medium resides within the shell, but is external to the heat transfer tube in fluid isolation from the fluidizable mixture. The wall of the heat transfer tube provides a heat transfer surface for heat exchange between the multi-phase fluid stream and the heat transfer medium, cooling the multi-phase fluid stream on contact to a temperature below the gas hydrate formation temperature and converting at least a portion of the hydrocarbon gas and initial water to a plurality of solid gas hydrate particles.
