Abstract: A brake force control apparatus performs brake assist control (BA control) to increase brake fluid pressure in order to generate a greater brake force than that generated during normal operation when it has been determined that emergency braking has been performed by a driver. The brake force control apparatus prohibits BA control with respect to the rear wheels and supplies a large brake fluid pressure only to the front wheels when conditions for performing BA control have been established (step 100) and an absolute value of a lateral acceleration Gy exceeds a predetermined value K (step 102). As a result, a reduction of cornering force of the rear wheels attendant upon performance of BA control is itself reduced and a tendency to oversteer is thereby suppressed.
