    Abstract: Processes and systems for producing potassium sulfate as a byproduct of a desulfurization process. Sulfur dioxide is absorbed from a flue gas using an ammonia-containing solution to produce an ammonium sulfate solution that contains dissolved ammonium sulfate. At least a first portion of the ammonium sulfate solution is heated before dissolving potassium chloride therein to form a slurry that contains potassium sulfate crystals and an ammonium chloride solution. The slurry is then cooled to precipitate additional potassium sulfate crystals, after which the potassium sulfate crystals are removed to yield a residual ammonium chloride solution that contains dissolved ammonium chloride and residual dissolved potassium sulfate. Ammonia is then absorbed into the residual ammonium chloride solution to further precipitate potassium sulfate crystals, which are removed to yield a residual ammonium chloride solution that is substantially free of dissolved potassium sulfate.

    Abstract: A flue gas desulfurization process and system that utilize ammonia as a reactant, and in which any hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans within the ammonia are separated during the desulfurization process so as to prevent their release into the atmosphere. The process and system entail absorbing acidic gases from a flue gas with a scrubbing media containing ammonium sulfate to produce a stream of scrubbed flue gas, collecting the scrubbing media containing the absorbed acidic gases, injecting into the collected scrubbing media a source of ammonia that is laden with hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans so that the injected ammonia is absorbed into and reacted with the collected scrubbing media, stripping the hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans from the collected scrubbing media by causing the hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans to exit the collected scrubbing media as stripped gases, and collecting the stripped gases without allowing the stripped gases to enter the stream of scrubbed flue gas.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process for removing acidic gases and NOx from flue gases produced by utility and industrial plants. The process and apparatus convert NOx, and particularly nitric oxide, to nitrogen dioxide, which is then reacted to form a valuable byproduct. The process generally entails contacting a flue gas with a scrubbing medium to absorb acidic gases from flue gas and produce an intermediate flue gas. The intermediate flue gas is then cooled to cause nitric oxide present therein to be oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, which is then absorbed from the flue gases to produce a nitrogen dioxide-containing solution and a scrubbed flue gas. The nitrogen dioxide in the nitrogen dioxide-containing solution is then reacted with ammonium hydroxide to form ammonium nitrate as a valuable byproduct.

    Abstract: A gas-liquid contactor for removing gases and particulate matter from flue gases produced by processing operations of the type carried out in utility and industrial plants. The contactor is generally an open spray absorber having a spray tower (110) whose walls (114) form a passage within the tower (110). Flue gases are introduced into the tower (110) so as to flow vertically upward or downward through the passage. Disposed within the passage are heads (116) for introducing a liquid (118) into the passage such that the liquid (118) contacts the flue gases. A portion of the liquid (118) contacts the wall (114) of the tower (110), such that the portion of the liquid (118) flows downwardly along the wall (114). The tower (110) is equipped with a deflecting device (122) disposed on the wall (114) for deflecting the portion of the liquid (118) away from the wall (114), and thereafter reintroducing the portion of the liquid (118) into the passage so as to contact the gases flowing through the passage.
