The rotary discharge block has a substantially flat sealing and a sliding surface engaging the fixed refractory top block and a spherical portion extending below the sealing and sliding surface. The process can be conducted either by rotating the vessel so as to expose successive annular sections and applying refractory mass to said sections from a fixed position or it can be performed by moving the source of refractory mass longitudinally to cover longitudinal sections and rotating the vessel only partially so as to bring the stream of refractory mass against a second longitudinal section.
