  • Patent number: 4961513
Abstract: A container comprising a body with a rim (6) of which at least the upper surface is of a first plastics material, and a flexible closure (8) of which at least the under surface is of a second plastics material different from the first, the body and closure being attached together by a heat seal formed between the said surfaces thereof, wherein the heat seal includes radially inner and radially outer ears (18,16) formed during the heat sealing operation by heat and pressure, each ear having a core (22,20) which is formed of the first plastics material and is joined integrally to the rim by a thin root (34,32), and an envelope (26,28) which is formed of the second plastics material integrally with the closure and which envelops the core and tapers in beneath the core to a position adjacent to the thin root of the core, both ears lying on the top of the rim around at least a substantial part of the container periphery, the closure having a free portion (10) located outside the heat seal for grasping by the user,

  • Patent number: 4894104
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sealing cartons by sticking together facing surfaces of a hinged flap and a wall of each carton by means of a solvent-based, preferably water-based, adhesive, in which the cartons are continuously moved along a line past an adhesive applicator which applies a deposit of adhesive to the under surface of the flap, first pressure rollers arranged to bring the flap surface temporarily into contact with the side wall to transfer some of the adhesive to it and to thin out and spread the adhesive on the flap, a hot air nozzle which enters within the acute angle formed between the two surfaces when the flap is released from the first pressure rollers and which directs hot air onto the surfaces to effect partial drying of the adhesive, and a second set of pressure rollers to press the flap against the side wall to effect final sealing.

  • Patent number: 4881884
Abstract: An apparatus for injection moulding plastics closure elements into apertures in the central panels of a plurality of can ends comprises a first mould tool, a second mould tool, and a mechanism for bringing the mould tools together to clamp on opposed surfaces of each central panel and thereby define a mould cavity enclosing a margin of panel material around the aperture and spanning both sides of the aperture. A passageway in at least one of the moulded tools permits injection of plastics material into the mould cavity. The first mould tool includes a plurality of cavity defining mould portions each slidably guided in a respective bore in the first mould tool and a resilient support in each bore to urge each mould portion towards the second mould tool. A stripper plate surrounds the mould inserts and is formed with an annular recess situated laterally outside of and around each insert to receive the outer circumference of a can end to properly locate the can end.

  • Patent number: 4843930
Abstract: The apparatus comprises axially aligned punches 1 and 2 which are operated to cooperate with dies 3 and 4 to trim the flanged ends of a tubular article. The dies are formed in two halves which are opened to allow an article to be positioned at the work station and are then closed around the ends of the article. The punches, dies, and an article delivering mechanism are driven in timed relation from a motor 5.

  • Patent number: 4830205
Abstract: A baby feeding pack comprises a pouch-like bag for containing a liquid infant food or drink having walls of flexible sheet plastics material and a gusset, also of a flexible plastics sheet material, sealed to the walls and carrying a teat with a removable closure. The gusset defines part of a sealed auxiliary compartment in which the teat is disposed and protected from contamination and which is closed by a top seal between the walls or between the upper margins of a sheet which also forms the gusset. On opening the auxiliary compartment along a severance line, the gusset can be inverted to form a frustoconical projection by which the teat is presented for access for feeding.

  • Patent number: 4828662
Abstract: A method of removing a layer of cobalt from an underlying nickel surface of an article comprises the steps of immersing at least part of the article in an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali having a pH value not less than 12.5 and preferably not less than 14, and applying an electrical potential difference between the article and a counter electrode which acts as a cathode to strip the cobalt from the article leaving the nickel passive. The method is particularly suitable for removing a defective cobalt layer from a data storage disc so that the disc can be recoated.
