  • Patent number: 9763684
Abstract: An apparatus includes a transmission member having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion. The transmission member is configured to be inserted into a bodily lumen, and is configured to transfer ultrasonic energy from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion. The transmission member defines a lumen along a longitudinal center line of the transmission member. The distal end portion of the transmission member includes a concave engagement surface and a distal end surface. The distal end surface defines a plane that intersects the longitudinal center line of the transmission member at an angle of between about 75 degrees and about 105 degrees. The engagement surface is configured to engage a target tissue within the bodily lumen to limit movement of the target tissue along the longitudinal center line. The engagement surface defines an opening in fluid communication with the lumen.

  • Patent number: 9713481
Abstract: An apparatus includes a monolithically-constructed transmission member that defines a lumen along a longitudinal axis. The transmission member includes a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion. The first portion is configured to be coupled to an ultrasonic energy source. The second portion is configured to contact a bodily tissue to transfer ultrasonic energy from a first portion into the bodily tissue. The third portion is disposed between the first portion and the second portion and defines a cross-sectional moment of inertia that is less than at least one of a cross-sectional area moment of inertia of the first portion or a cross-sectional moment of inertia of the second portion.

  • Publication number: 20140364775
Abstract: A coupler includes a first portion and a second portion, and defines a passageway configured to fixedly receive a proximal end portion of a transmission member. The first portion is configured to be coupled to an ultrasonic energy source. The coupler is configured to transfer at least a portion of an ultrasonic vibration produced by the ultrasonic energy source to the transmission member. Furthermore, the first portion and the second portion are collectively configured to adjust a resonant frequency of the transmission member to correspond to a vibrational frequency of the ultrasonic vibration produced by the ultrasonic energy source. In some embodiments, the portion of the ultrasonic vibration includes a linear component. In such embodiments, the first portion and the second portion are collectively configured to transform at least a portion of the linear component of the ultrasonic vibration into a torsional component within the transmission member.
