  • Patent number: 6117491
Abstract: The present invention concerns a process and a coating color for coating a cellulosic web. According to the process an aqueous coating color is applied on the surface of the web. The invention comprises using a coating color which contains an aqueous polymer whose viscosity in an aqueous solution increases when the temperature rises. Preferably, methylcellulose or a corresponding polymer having a gelling temperature of about 5 to 10 .degree. C. more than the application tempature of the coating color is used. The temperature of the coating is increased after the application of the coating color in order to achieve gelling of the polymer. As a result, the coating color rapidly solidifies which decreases the amount of mixture being recycled and it reduces mist-formation in the film press method and improves coverage of coating applied by conventional blade coating.

  • Patent number: 5914004
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method of producing paper pulp from a fibrous raw material. According to the invention, such pulpwood is used in which the content of phenol compounds or phenolic derivatives is clearly, advantageously at least 20% lower than the average content of such compounds in the native grade of the raw material. Advantageously, the content of parahydroxy-benzoic acid (PHBA) is determined from the pulpwood and pulpwood containing low PHBA levels is used as pulping raw material.

  • Patent number: 5571381
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for cutting the edge of a fibre web (4) in a paper machine. In the method, water nozzles (13a, 13b) are Conducted in a transverse direction with respect to the edge of the fibre web (4) so that the place where the cut comes against the surface of the yankee cylinder of the drying unit varies. The apparatus comprises water nozzles (13a, 13b) used for cutting, pipes (14a, 14b), a base (16), and a pneumatic cylinder (17) by which the water nozzles (13a, 13b) are deflected both in a longitudinal and transverse direction with respect to the fibre web (4).

  • Patent number: 5415735
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for the recovery of organic substances dissolved or brought into a colloid form during the manufacture of a mechanical pulp where said mechanical pulp has not been subject to previous alkaline bleaching or other previous process carried out under alkaline conditions. The method is characterized in the deacetylation of the galactoglucomannans having been brought into dissolved or colloidal form during the pulping process, and subsequent deposition of said deacetylated glucomannans onto a solid phase, such as pulp fibers or organic or inorganic additives. The deacetylation is performed either by alkali or enzymatically. The method diminishes the organic substance loading on recycling waters and effluents, and improves the yield and strength properties of the pulp.

  • Patent number: 5069378
Abstract: A paper dispenser is furnished with one or more turnable or tiltable cutting or tearing off device, equipped with serrated or jagged edges. When inactive, the cutting edge is held by a spring or by force of gravity in a safe or innocuous position. As a drawing force is applied to the paper web coming out of the dispenser, the cutting or tearing off device is turned or tilted so that the serrations of the cutting edge come into contact with the paper web. When a portion of the web is torn off, the jagged edge returns to its shielded position. The cutting or tearing off device can be directly actuated by the paper web, or via an intermediate element.

  • Patent number: 5024362
Abstract: A guard intended to prevent hand-injuries against tear-bars has an elongated form (6) and extends parallel with a tear-edge and is moveable in a direction transversal to its longitudinal axis. The guard (6) has a length equal to the length of the tear-bar (2). The guard (6) is guided in a gap (5) defined between a strip-like (4) front side of the tear-bar (2) and an inwardly angled part of the wall (1) of the casing intended to accommodate, for instance, a paper-roll holder incorporating the tear-bar (2). For the purpose of limiting movement of the guard (6) between an outer active guard position and an inner inactive position, in which the tear-edge of the tear-bar (2) is exposed, there is provided along the guard (6) a rib (8) which abuts the free edge of the strip-like front side of the tear-bar in the outer position of the guard. The guard is displaced to its inner position in the gap (5) by the material web (P) when severing the paper-web against the tear-bar (2).

  • Patent number: 4941943
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an equipment for preparing NaCMC, in which (a) cellulose is slushed in the reaction medium until a consistency of c. 5-15%, preferably 5-10%, (b) the fibre suspension obtained in step (a) is thickened to a consistency of c. 20-35% and (c) the pulp containing reaction medium obtained in the second step is homogenized by means of a screw conveyor having a screw pitch which decreases from an inlet opening thereof towards an outlet opening thereof, in order to increase the reactivity, whereby a mercerization activating the cellulose is carried out after step (b) and/or (c), and the cellulose thus pretreated is etherified in a manner known per se.
