Abstract: Live attenuated bacteria vaccines against enteric septicemia of fish, especially catfish, and methods related to the same. Mutant strains of the bacteria Edwardsiella ictaluri (a pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae) are provided. The mutant Edwardsiella ictaluri bacteria (or other pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae) contain one or more gene deletions or disruptions that result in less virulent bacterial strains as live attenuated vaccine compositions against virulent wild-type Edwardsiella ictaluri bacteria (or other pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae). The mutant strains showing the best immunological protection and safety as a vaccine are the triple mutants ESC-NDKL1 (?gcvP?sdhC?frdA) strain and ESC-NDKL2 (?gcvP?sdhC?mdh) strain, with the ESC-NDKL1 strain providing the greatest safety and efficacy of these two triple mutants.
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel process and system in which a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen synthesis gas, or syngas, is converted into hydrocarbon mixtures composed of high quality distillates, gasoline components, and lower molecular weight gaseous olefins in one reactor or step. The invention utilizes a novel supported bimetallic ion complex catalyst for conversion, and provides methods of preparing such novel catalysts and use of the novel catalysts in the process and system of the invention.
Abstract: Methods and kits for detection of bacteria, especially Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp., are provided using a unique combination of selective ingredients and two-phase culture (solid-phase culture gel and liquid-phase culture/enrichment broth) allows for high sensitivity and specificity of the kits for growth of Salmonella and Listeria in the detection methods and kits. The invention, through the detection mechanism accomplished by the novel formulation of selective ingredients and the two-phase culture, allows for real-time detection of a single cell of Salmonella and Listeria within 24±2 hours of introducing a target sample to the Salmonella and Listeria detection kits. The detection methods and kits for Salmonella may optionally further comprise a confirmation step that can increase sensitivity and accuracy for this pathogenic bacteria.
Abstract: A high throughput bioluminescence mutant screening procedure is disclosed. This procedure utilizes robotics, and bacterial luciferase to allow real-time monitoring of mutant viability. The procedure was used to decelop a live attenuated vaccine for a catfish against E. ictaluri, which is further claimed herein. Additionally, genes from other bacterial species are disclosed which may also be used to create vaccines.
Abstract: The present invention provides for novel biochar compositions and a method for producing a new substrate for growing plants using the biochar and a method for growing plants using the biochar composition substrate.
