Abstract: A polishing system comprising one or more magnetic units able to produce a magnetic field is provided. The magnetic units may cause a polishing material to become plasticized and the plasticized material is able to polish a surface of a work piece. The polishing material may intermittently and repeatedly contact with the surface for polishing. A method for engraving or embossing a predefined pattern in a surface during magneto-rheological polishing of the surface is also provided.
Abstract: Magnetic polishing fluid compositions comprising various size colloidal and/or non-colloidal magnetic particle and colloidal size polishing particle compositions suitable for polishing ceramic and glass substrates are described. The compositions are usually aqueous compositions having highly basic pHs. Methods for preparing the various polishing fluids compositions are also discussed.
Abstract: Magnetic polishing fluid compositions for polishing metal substrates containing colloidal and/or non-colloidal magnetic particles are described. The compositions contain oxidizers and, for example, oxidation inhibitors for assisting in the polishing process. Colloidal polishing particles may also be employed. The compositions are usually highly acidic. Methods for preparing the various polishing fluids compositions are described.
Abstract: A system for polishing a surface including a polishing material and one or more magnetic means in contact with the polishing material. The one or more magnetic means react upon the polishing material to plasticize it, whereby the plasticized material is then used to polish the surface. Preferably the polishing material intermittently and repeatedly contacts with the surface for polishing.
A method for polishing a planar surface including bringing two or more magnetic means into contact with a polishing material, thereby plasticizing the polishing material. Then a planar side of the surface contacts the plasticized polishing material, so that the plasticized polishing material polishes the surface. Upon contact with the surface, the plasticized polishing material liquidizes. After termination of the contact with the surface, the liquidized polishing material solidifies. The surface is moved and the above steps are repeated a multiplicity of times until the surface is polished.
