  • Patent number: 4372181
Abstract: The compact power wrenching machine (10) has an elongated, rigid frame (11). A fluid-operated cylinder (20') having a reciprocating ram (20) is mounted at one end of the frame. A wrench (22), preferably a ratcheting-type, is rotatably mounted at the opposite end of the frame. A force-transferring mechanism (21) has a body which is movably mounted on the frame between the wrench and the ram. The ram is securely connected to the mechanism's body which supports the ratchet wrench for relative motion therebetween. In use, the body of the mechanism is moved by the ram, the ratchet wrench is rotated by the body of the mechanism, and the rotating wrench can also rotate a threaded fastener.

  • Patent number: 4309923
Abstract: The power tool comprises a slit wrench having a pair of semi-cylindrical segments boltable to each other and defining a socket. At least one wrench segment has a laterally and outwardly-extending head defining a plurality of notches having ridges which are rounded and inclined to allow the application of a force thereto as by the rod of a hydraulic cylinder. A reaction-and-support structure serves as a mounting platform for the hydraulic cylinder. This structure also generates the required reaction forces. The rod of the hydraulic cylinder carries a drive pin which applies, during each power stroke of the cylinder, a drive force against consecutive notches, thereby rotating the threaded connector through a small angle during each power stroke of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4308767
Abstract: The wrench for wrenching a shaft or stud comprises a housing having a longitudinal recess therein for mounting the housing over the shaft to be turned. A pawl is pivotably connected to the housing. A first clamping jaw is slidably mounted in the recess. A second jaw is slidably mounted in the recess. The first jaw is disposed for limited rotational and translational movement within the recess so as to open the clamping jaws to allow the tool wrench to be mounted over or to be removed from the shaft. A wrenching actuator is connected to the pawl arm for turning the pawl clockwise and counter-clockwise about the pawl's pivot. A clamping actuator is mounted on the housing for turning the pawl to thereby initially securely clamp the jaws about the shaft to be turned. Wrenching of the shaft can then be accomplished with the wrenching actuator by applying a torque on the pawl in a direction so as to increase the clamping force produced by the jaws and to rotate the shaft together with the housing.

  • Patent number: 4269088
Abstract: The power tool is adapted for driving one of a plurality of adjacently-spaced castellated nuts. Each castellated nut has a number of radial slots. Each nut is adapted to connect with a stud having an axial threaded bore. The power tool comprises a wrench driver for turning one of the castellated nuts. A wrench arm extends laterally from the wrench adapter. An anchor assembly is coupled to the wrench driver and includes an anchor adapter. The wrench driver has a head which carries an equal number of radial lugs for operatively engaging the slots in the nut. A retaining cylindrical skirt downwardly extends from the wrench driver's head for capturing therein a portion of the body of the castellated nut while the driver's lugs engage the nut's slots. A retaining bolt threadedly interconnects the wrench driver with the stud carrying the castellated nut prior to exerting power with the power tool, thereby preventing the lugs from disengaging from their mating slots.

  • Patent number: 4200011
Abstract: The high power wrenching tool includes a high-torque ratchet wrench, a reaction frame which supports the ratchet wrench, and a fluid actuator on the frame for actuating the wrench. The wrench comprises two parallel side plates. Each plate has at one end thereof a bore. A ratchet wheel and a cooperating pawl are operatively disposed between the plates. The ratchet wheel has a center slot and carries a plurality of angularly-spaced teeth. The frame has at one end a pair of transversely-spaced outer rings positioned adjacent to the ratchet wheel. A pair of hubs are removably securable to the opposite sides of the wheel and are rotatably mounted in the frame's outer rings. Each hub has a slot identical to the slot of the wheel and in register therewith. The reciprocating actuator is detachably coupled between the pawl arm and the other end of the frame.

  • Patent number: 4132136
Abstract: The power wrench for turning threaded connection members comprises a power cylinder having a piston rod extending from one end of the cylinder and being operably coupled to a wrench arm connectable to a connection member for turning the same. A reaction support structure has a pivotal connection with the other end of the cylinder. The reaction support structure is supported from a pair of connection members. The structure includes discretely adjustable means for varying the angular position of the cylinder so as to maintain at mid-stroke of the rod, a substantially perpendicular relationship between the piston rod and the wrench arm to thereby accommodate the power wrench to a wide range of distinctly different patterns of the connection members.

  • Patent number: 4091890
Abstract: The high-torque ratchet wrench comprises two parallel side plates. Each plate has at one end thereof a bore. An annular ratchet wheel and a cooperating pawl are operatively disposed between the plates. The ratchet wheel defines a socket and carries a plurality of angularly-spaced teeth. A hub laterally extends from each side of the wheel. The hubs are rotatably mounted in the bores of the plates. The pawl has a head end portion which is pivotable about a pivot axis. A pivot pin including the pivot axis transversely extends between the plates for pivotally mounting the pawl between the plates. A pawl arm extends radially from the pivot pin relative to the wheel. The free end of the pawl is formed with a laterally extending segment relative to the wheel. The pawl segment has teeth on its side edge adapted to mesh with the ratchet wheel teeth.

  • Patent number: 3964352
Abstract: The back-up wrench comprises a stationary jaw having an angular gripping wall adapted to grip two adjacent sides of different size connectors, and a rotatable jaw having a concave wall adapted to grip limited portions of two symmetrically-opposite sides of the connectors. The rotatable jaw is pivotally mounted on a cylindrical bearing surface provided by a forward extension of a plate whose rearward end is pivotally mounted on a stationary handle forming integral part with the stationary jaw. A rotatable handle is pivotally coupled to the plate. Conventional means are provided in and between the handles for applying and releasing the gripping action of the jaws against the four sides of the connector.
