  • Patent number: 7197394
Abstract: An in-vehicle navigation system includes a receiver for receiving real-time traffic information (RTTI), a database for storing routine trip information, and a processor for running a regular route application. The regular route application includes a learning mode program and an operational mode program. The learning mode program records information regarding trips regularly taken by a vehicle and populates the database with records of routine trip information. The recorded trip information can include driver identifiers, trip departure times, origin points, destination points, dates of travel, days of travel, and route data. When the vehicle begins a new trip, the operational mode program determines whether the vehicle is engaging in a routine trip. This is accomplished by comparing current vehicle location or departure time information to routine trip information in the database.

  • Patent number: 7177761
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for displaying map information on a computing device. Data are stored for rendering a simulation of travel along one or more road segments prior to embarking on travel along the road segments. The simulation is comprised of a sequence of views of the road network along each road segment from vantage points above or along the road network. Each road segment may be part of a calculated route and the simulation may include views for all the road segments contained in the calculated route. While the computing device is being conveyed along each road segment, the data stored for the simulation is used to show a view of the road network that includes the current position of the computing device on a display of the computing device.

  • Patent number: 7114050
Abstract: A method whereby a computing platform that uses geographic data that are spatially organized into parcels of a given size can specify a parcel block size larger than the given size. Thereafter, during runtime, the geographic data are accessed by the computing platform in groups of one or more parcels not larger than the parcel block size. According to one embodiment, at or after initialization of the computing platform, groupings of parcels corresponding to parcel blocks are determined. Each parcel block has a size larger than the maximum parcel size but not larger than a maximum parcel block size. Data identifying the groupings and the parcels corresponding thereto are stored on the computing platform and the data identifying the groupings and the parcels corresponding thereto are used to access all the parcels corresponding to a parcel block whenever geographic data in any one of the parcels are needed.

  • Patent number: 7099882
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for the merging of multiple map databases. These multiple map databases can be stored on separate media. Each map database is comprised of whole parcels and conforms to a baseline parcelization pattern. At run time in a navigation system, a single parcel index is constructed that contains references to parcels from the multiple map databases. References to parcels use a combined media directory covering all media objects. The combined media directory is created by merging tables of contents from each media object. This method can be used to incrementally update a geographic database.

  • Patent number: 7096117
Abstract: A method and system of polyline generation for rendering a representation of a geographic region is provided. Within a database containing geographic data, polyline data entities represent geographic features. Each polyline data entity is associated with a drawcode that defines attributes of the data entity, and organized within the database based on the drawcode. During a rendering process, a processor can read a group of data from a database stored on a disc that is organized to contain all polyline data entities associated with the same drawcode. The processor can then render all geographic features in an area that are similar using one or a minimum number of disc reads.

  • Patent number: 7051035
Abstract: A data construction for storing data efficiently and a method for forming and using the data construction is disclosed. The method comprises representing a set of actual data values from an original source of data with an alternative representation. One or more parameters of a formula are determined to approximate the set of actual data values in the original source of data. For each actual data value in the original source of data, the difference between the actual data value and the value predicted therefor by the formula is determined. The difference for each actual data value is stored in a data construction on the medium along with the one or more parameters. The alternative representation preserves the information content of the actual data values from the original source of data while reducing the storage requirements for storing the information on a medium.
