    Abstract: Systems and methods for IR readable transmissive and reflective displays are disclosed that do not suffer from a mirror-like appearance or undesirable dimming of the display due to sequential stacks of polarizers. The disclosed systems and methods use available IR LEDs in addition to, or in place of, visible light LEDs. An illuminator or integrator, which is a lightguide, is designed to maintain the polarization state of the light. The display can use a regular visible light, front polarizer and hence does not suffer from brightness reduction caused by an IR capable polarizer. A digital license plate application comprising a reflective liquid crystal display with a front light, which includes polarized IR illumination, is also disclosed.

Scattering netted dots are fixed on a side of the light guide substrate, and the scattering netted dots are provided on the light guide substrate by means of ultra-violet (UV) nanoimprint lithography. By providing the scattering netted dots on the light guide substrate by means of UV nanoimprint lithography, the reflectivity of the light guide substrate can be effectively reduced, and a better display effect can thus be obtained.

    Abstract: A method to drive bi-stable liquid crystal displays and related drivers and displays using same are disclosed. The method and driver use additional high impedance states of the outputs to save power while addressing bi-stable and multi-stable liquid crystal displays. The invention implements high impedance states at the driver outputs, allowing non-addressed sections of the display to electrically “float” and by doing so reduces the required power to drive the display. Other advantages include improved visual effect of an update, such as reduced flash during the update, simpler operation, and better yields due to a larger operating window.

    Abstract: A simplified touch screen system that can sense when an object is held in continuous direct or indirect contact with a transparent substrate of the touch screen system as well as determine a location (e.g., X, Y coordinates) of the object in relation to the transparent substrate. The touch screen system employs capacitance technology to sense whether the object is held in contact with the transparent substrate and acoustic sensing technology to determine a position of the object that is contacting the transparent substrate. The touch screen system requires a reduced number of shielding and isolation layers to be deposited upon the transparent substrate, partially because the touch screen system utilizes a bezel associated with an underlying display to provide shielding against electromagnetic radiation emitted by the display.

    Abstract: A capacitive touch screen panel includes top and bottom ITO coated glass sheets that may both be connected to detection electronics (e.g., a controller) by way of a single, normal flexible printed circuit connector. The ITO coated surface of each of the top and bottom glass sheets may face each other and a transparent material such as an optically clear adhesive may be disposed between the top and bottom glass sheets. In some embodiments, a number of spacers may be disposed between the top and bottom glass sheets to maintain a desired gap between the sheets. In other embodiments, the single, normal flexible printed circuit connector may generally reside in a single plane.
