    Abstract: A proximity based authentication system and method is described. The system includes a gateway, a cloud component, and a mobile device. The gateway is associated with a particular location and is communicatively coupled to a cloud component. The gateway includes a gateway short-range wireless radio capable of establishing a short-range wireless communication channel. The mobile device is also communicatively coupled the cloud component and includes a mobile device short-range wireless radio that communicates with the gateway using the short-range wireless communication channel when the mobile device is in proximity of the gateway. The mobile device receives a gateway key over the short-range wireless communication channel. The mobile device then communicates the gateway key to a cloud component database. The cloud component authenticates the particular location of the mobile device when the cloud component receives the gateway key from the mobile device.

The server component receives the beacon identifier and the measured sensor beacon signal strength from the fixed sensor. The server component uses the beacon identifier and the beacon signal strength communicated by the wireless device and the sensor beacon signal strength and the beacon identifier received by the sensor to determine the location of the wireless device.

The system and method utilize a gateway apparatus that is communicates coupled to a cloud component over a first network channel, and communicates a gateway key over a local wireless Bluetooth channel. The gateway includes a processor, a memory, a fixed location, and a local broadcast range associated with an area surrounding the fixed location. The cloud component registers the gateway and a mobile wireless device having a processor and memory. When the mobile wireless device is within the local broadcast range of the gateway, the mobile wireless receives the gateway key over the local wireless channel. Upon receiving the gateway key, the mobile wireless device communicates a device key over the local wireless channel to the gateway.

The virtual reference points comprise signal strengths for each of the plurality of beacons estimated at intervals throughout the premises. The system further comprises a wireless handset configured to receive a handset fingerprint comprising a signal identifier and a signal strength from the beacons. The location of the wireless handset is determined based on a comparison between the handset fingerprint signal strengths and the signal strengths of a subset of the virtual reference point fingerprints.
