  • Patent number: 6792274
Abstract: In a system handling communication between base transceiver stations (BTS1-BTS12) and base station controllers (BSC) of a cellular radio network the transmission capacity is composed of a predetermined number of capacity units (T0-T31). At least one capacity unit (TCH) can be allocated to a given base station group which comprises at least two base transceiver stations. Said capacity unit is allocated to a certain base transceiver station in the base station group when the instantaneous volume of traffic handled by said base transceiver station requires temporary allocation of additional capacity, and said capacity unit is again released so as to be allocatable to the base station group when the instantaneous volume of traffic handled by said base transceiver station no longer requires temporary allocation of additional capacity.

  • Patent number: 6792248
Abstract: A method for controlling transmission power in a radio system and in a WCDMA system network in particular for maximizing cell capacity. An acceptable transmission power margin and an optimum power level, which may change specifically for each connection and service class, are determined for the transmission power. Transmission power is adjusted using power control steps utilizing an incoming power control command and previous power control steps. The power control step size is adjusted as a sum of a fixed and a variable dynamic step size where the dynamic value is obtained on the basis of the measured value and the target value of the signal-to-noise ratio. Information on the network state can be obtained by comparing AC and LC data and the cell capacity can be maximized by controlling the amount of transmission power calculated by the mobile station before the final power transmission.

  • Patent number: 6792278
Abstract: The invention comprises a method for establishing a signaling connection with a mobile station, which method is particularly applicable to third-generation mobile communications networks. A database is created at a node of a mobile communications network, and a mobile station connected with the network sends to said database information about all its subscriber identities (403). In the database, information is added (404) to the subscriber identity information which may be useful when said mobile station is paged (410, 411). Such contactability information includes e.g. the mobile station's location information, information about existing signaling connections and information about the primary paging channel monitored by the mobile station. The contactability information is updated according to changes detected in the status of the mobile station (406). The database will be discontinued for a mobile station that has had no connections for a predetermined time.

  • Patent number: 6788729
Abstract: The invention relates to a frequency hopping method and a base station including, at the receiver end, a number of baseband processing units and broadband receiver units, which form RF sub-bands and receive frequency hopping signals according to a frequency hopping sequence from the RF sub-bands they have formed. The base station includes, at the receiver end, a switching device and channelling unit, which receive baseband signals from an intermediate band and each of which is connected to a receiver unit forming a particular RF sub-band. The switching device selects, according to the frequency hopping sequence, the channelling unit whose baseband output provides the baseband signal which is connected to the baseband processing unit. The channelling unit places the baseband signals to its baseband output according to the frequency hopping sequence.

  • Patent number: 6785547
Abstract: A method and apparatus implement network planning in a radio system in a desired area. To determine transmitter coverage, a vector map describing the surroundings of the transmitter and containing a description of buildings and surfaces reflecting radio waves in the area is used. The transmitter signal strength is measured at points of a desired area. A subset is selected among the points, path attenuation is determined between all subset points using a ray tracing method, and the calculated values are stored in a memory. When performing network planning, a transmitter and a receiver are located at the points in the areas; a given number of the most significant signal paths among the possible signal propagation paths between the transmitter and the receiver is searched for using the values stored in the memory, and the transmitter signal strength is determined at the receipt location point using the ray tracing method.

  • Patent number: 6781954
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for signal monitoring of messages in a telecommunications network having a plurality of switches and network elements therein alleviate the need for external hardware to be hooked up to nodes of the network to determine whether faults have occurred at the nodes. A signal monitoring application disclosed herein stores related message signals and messages in a relational database wherein messages and signals having common elements can be easily and quickly viewed. The SIMO application cross-references the messages and signals in the relational database according to a transaction table which categorizes and stores the messages according to parameters set out in the transaction table. This allows the messages to be ranked and viewed very quickly without the need to process them and expend valuable computational time and resources.

  • Patent number: 6771964
Abstract: A method and a wireless telecommunication system of performing network-assisted handover of calls between a serving network and another wireless network that employs communication protocols different from those of the serving network. A message is sent from a mobile station of a user to the serving wireless network, which includes an indication that the mobile station is capable of communicating with the neighboring wireless network. Information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network is also sent from the serving wireless network to the mobile station. Using the information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network, the mobile station receives radio signals from the neighboring wireless network. • Patent number: 6771959
Abstract: A method for transmitting a call parameter, such as the identifier (A#) of an A subscriber, to a first switching centre (GMSC) from a second switching centre (VMSC) serving the terminal (MS) of an A subscriber, when both switching centres (GMSC, VMSC) are connected to an intelligent network service control point (SCP). The second switching centre (VMSC) receives from the A subscriber a call set-up request (2) to set up a call through the first switching centre (GMSC). The second switching centre (VMSC) transmits to the service control point (SCP) an intelligent network service initiation message (4) which contains the call parameter (A#). The service control point saves (6) into its memory the call parameter (A#) to wait for a second intelligent network service initiation message (12) associated with the same call. The second switching centre (VMSC) routes (10) the call to the first switching centre (GMSC).

  • Patent number: 6757540
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for calculating a model to be used for controlling cellular network capacity and for facilitating the control of the capacity, the method comprising the generating of variable groups from cellular network variables and the determining of the interdependencies of the variable groups of the cellular network. The invention is characterized in that linear combinations dependent on each other are searched for in the variable groups, the dependence between the linear combinations and the strength of the dependence being measured by applying a canonical correlation coefficient; a multidimensional dependence between two variable groups in pairs being expressed in the method by only a few canonical variable pairs. Canonical correlation analysis facilitates the modelling of dependencies between large variable groups and the determining of the most important variables.

  • Patent number: 6757345
Abstract: The invention relates to a reception method and a receiver to receive signals supplied from a radio path, and the signals include information and each signal which arrives at the receiver is delayed by a unique delay value. The receiver includes a filtering device and a distribution device to determine the strength of a part of a signal delayed by a certain propagation delay by several values of the propagation delay. The distribution device compares the delay differences of the received signals with each other and forms sums of the strengths of the signal parts determined by different values of the propagation delay. The distribution device selects values deviate at least by a predetermined delay difference whose sum of the strengths of the signal parts obtains the highest possible value. The receiver indicates the received information by using the signals selected above.
