  • Patent number: 5642640
Abstract: A method for forming ports on a heat exchanger manifold, in which risers are back extruded in a single operation from the surrounding material of the manifold such that subsequent machining steps to further define and finish the port are unnecessary. The method of this invention generally includes forging the manifold between a pair of die halves so as to back extrude a localized portion of the manifold into a riser cavity in one of the die halves. Afterwards, and while the manifold remains within the die cavity, a punch is forced through the riser cavity and into the extruded portion in a direction toward the manifold so as to further back extrude the extruded portion. This step causes the raised portion to flow in a direction opposite to the direction of the punch, producing a riser having an internal bore defined by the punch and an outer surface defined by the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5634985
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for control of the properties of the remaining oil layer on magnesium or magnesium alloy particles and/or other reactive metal particles produced from molten metal. The particles are cooled in a cooling oil with subsequent centrifuging and heating to remove remaining oil. A part of the oil layer on the particles is replaced with a lighter oil, preferably during centrifuging. The oil can be supplied as a spray. The light oil is supplied in an amount of 0.5-10 weight %. The light oil used should have a viscosity <5 cP at 25.degree. C. and a flashpoint <100.degree. C. Preferably it is used oils having a viscosity <2.5 cP and a flash point between 30.degree. and 75.degree. C. It is preferred to use dearomatized oil.

  • Patent number: 5628911
Abstract: An improved partial oxidation, gasification process using low grade hydrocarbon feedstock involving the steps of gasification, waste heat recovery and carbon removal under formation of a soot water slurry containing the unburned carbon and ash. The soot water slurry is filtered to form a filtercake of carbon and ash, which cake is removed from the process. A direct once-through, partial oxidation process is thereby established, avoiding the recycle of unburned carbon and ash. The method also comprises filtration of the soot-ash slurries containing 0.5-3% unburned carbon and 0.1-2% ash having appreciable amounts of Fe, Ni and V. The slurry is cooled to a temperature below 80.degree. C. and filtered while confined between movable closed belts maintaining a constant pressure against the shrinking mass of carbon/ash particles until the moisture content is reduced to below 80% by weight.

  • Patent number: 5603832
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for removing hydrogen sulphide (H.sub.2 S) from oil-containing water and equipment therefor. Oil-containing water and nitrate is conducted through a bioreactor to remove H.sub.2 S. Nitrate is added to the oil-containing water in a dose ratio (sulphide:nitrate) of 1:10 to 1:40. The retention time in the reactor tank is 10-60 minutes. After this treatment, purified water where >90% of the H.sub.2 S-amount is removed are taken out of the tank. The equipment for performing the method is based on a bioreactor having a large density of denitrifying bacteria. The reactor tank 1 is filled with carrying material providing large contact area. Even distribution of oil-containing water and nitrate over the carrying material which already may be covered by septic mud, forms an active sulphide oxidizing biofilm having a large surface. This biofilm is extremely effective for removing sulphide from oil-containing water.

  • Patent number: 5577796
Abstract: A structural beam, particularly for use as a door pillar or a bumper of a motor vehicle, includes a one-piece elongated extruded member formed of a light metal. The member has therethrough an elongated, laterally enclosed cavity defined by elongated side walls including at least two generally parallel side walls. A deformation pressure is applied to walls extending generally transverse to the two side walls, with the result that there occurs controlled folding of the two side walls with the formation therein of folds that extend parallel to the direction of elongation of the member. • Patent number: 5529816
Abstract: An improved process is provided for forming a zinc-base alloy coating on an aluminum alloy profile, such as a tube or microtube used in the assembling and brazing of a heat exchanger which is suitable for automotive applications. The process of the present invention is a continuous, high speed coating technique which can utilize aluminum alloy profiles on which an aluminum oxide layer is present. Accordingly, the present invention encompasses an operation by which the aluminum oxide layer is removed so as to enable the zinc-base alloy to metallurgically adhere to the surface of the aluminum alloy profile. The process of this invention also is capable of closely controlling the thickness of the zinc-base alloy coating, such that a sufficient but minimal amount of coating is present to furnish corrosion protection as well as provide sufficient filler metal for a subsequent soldering or low temperature brazing operation.
