Abstract: A server process renders instances of a 3D virtual environment as video streams that may then be viewed on devices not sufficiently powerful to implement the rendering process natively or which do not have native rendering software installed. The server process is broken down into two steps: 3D rendering and video encoding. The 3D rendering step uses knowledge of the codec, target video frame rate, size, and bit rate from the video encoding step to render a version of the virtual environment at the correct frame rate, in the correct size, color space, and with the correct level of detail, so that the rendered virtual environment is optimized for encoding by the video encoding step. Likewise, the video encoding step uses knowledge of motion from the 3D rendering step in connection with motion estimation, macroblock size estimation, and frame type selection, to reduce the complexity of the video encoding process.

  • Publication number: 20110222851
Abstract: A system for enabling reconfiguration of a Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) optical communications network. A plurality of channel transmitters are provided for generating respective optical signals within corresponding wavelength channels of the network. A broadband light source generates a broadband continuous wave light having a bandwidth corresponding to a channel band of the network. A wavelength selective switch includes a first switch port connected to receive optical signals from the channel transmitters. A second switch port is connected to receive the broadband continuous wave light from the broadband light source. The wavelength selective switch is configured to comb the broadband continuous wave light into a plurality of narrowband lights respectively corresponding with wavelength channels of the network. A common-OUT port of the wavelength selective switch outputs a WDM signal for transmission through a downstream fibre span of the network.

  • Publication number: 20110222850
Abstract: A method of testing a dual-polarization optical transmitter comprising a pair of polarization transmitters for respectively generating first and second polarization signals, and a polarization combiner for generating an optical signal composed of the first and second polarization signals with respective orthogonal polarization vectors. Each of the polarization transmitters is controlled to transmit respective polarization optical signals having predetermined characteristics. An output of the dual-polarization optical transmitter is tapped to obtain a first tap signal representative of the first polarization signal, and a second tap signal representative of the second polarization signal. A relative angle between respective polarization vectors of the tap signals is controlled, and the first and second tap signals combined to generate a combined light. A power level of the combined light is detected, and processed to obtain information about the performance of the dual polarization transmitter.

  • Publication number: 20110222637
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the contribution of noise to digitally sampled signals includes a statistical processor and a slope limiter. The statistical processor determines an average value (mean and/or standard deviation) of the filtered signal which is used to determine a slope limit corresponding to an expected maximum first derivative value of a target signal frequency. This slope limit is applied to constrain the output of an analog to digital converter, to prevent the output of the analog to digital converter from exceeding this maximum rate of rise or fall. By constraining the output of the analog to digital converter, it is possible to digitally sample analog signals without first utilizing an anti-aliasing filter, since the post processing of the digitally sampled signals limits the contribution of the higher frequency components of the signal to thereby enable a fully digital sampling and filtering circuit to be provided for receiving signals.

  • Publication number: 20110223906
Abstract: In a cellular wireless system, power thresholds used for determining whether or not to add or drop servers held in a set of servers, such as an active set, for serving a user equipment are determined on the basis of the motion of the respective user equipment. A lower threshold may be used with respect to the adding or dropping of a given server to or from a set of servers for serving a fast moving user equipment than would be used for the same server with respect to its adding or dropping to or from a set of servers for serving a slow moving user equipment, while maintaining a given quality of service. As a result, the average number of servers held in sets is reduced in a typical network that comprises a plurality of user equipments moving at different speeds, compared to a situation in which the threshold is set irrespective of the motion of a user equipment.

  • Patent number: 8019343
Abstract: The invention supports two types of handoffs. The first handoff is for an inter-AN cell selection where the source AN allows the AT to add a cell under the control of a different AN to its active set and then allows the AT to switch to the target AN. A bearer path is established between the source and target AN to transfer the packet data traffic using an exchange of messages to register the AT's movement from one BTS to another BTS. The A8/A10 connections remain anchored at the source AN and, hence, a bearer path is needed between the source and target AN to transfer the packet data traffic. The second handoff occurs when the source AN specifies a move of the AT to a new AN proactively. New connections are established at the target AN to support the AT, and the AT is subsequently moved to the target AN via the relevant air-interface messaging.

  • Patent number: 8018975
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for performing acquisition, synchronization and cell selection within an MIMO-OFDM communication system. A coarse synchronization is performed to determine a searching window. A fine synchronization is then performed by measuring correlations between subsets of signal samples, whose first signal sample lies within the searching window, and known values. The correlations are performed in the frequency domain of the received signal. In a multiple-output OFDM system, each antenna of the OFDM transmitter has a unique known value. The known value is transmitted as pairs of consecutive pilot symbols, each pair of pilot symbols being transmitted at the same subset of sub-carrier frequencies within the OFDM frame.

  • Patent number: 8019841
Abstract: Described are a system and method for establishing zone-based pricing for services transported over connectionless and connection-oriented networks. The connectivity network supporting the service is partitioned into one or more zones. A node connected to a packet transport network receives a packet associated with the service. The packet has information that is used to identify one of the zones of the connectivity network to which the packet can be transmitted. Service providers are thus able to use zoning to apply a pricing structure for services traditionally lacking distance-based pricing, such as Ethernet, Storage, and Internet Protocol services.

  • Publication number: 20110219128
Abstract: The invention is directed to optimizing setup of a VCAT connections using (largest) CCAT containers so as to minimize the number of cross-connection commands needed to enable data transfer. A system and method are provided for enhancing VCAT networks to include faster service restoration rates and faster connection setup times. One embodiment includes expanding available VCAT timeslots to include available CCAT timeslots. A routing and signaling control module alerts a source network element, internal network elements and a destination network element that the data transmission includes VCAT payloads rather than the expected CCAT payloads. By issuing this alert, the routing and signaling control module instructs an end-point monitoring function to overlook any mismatch between the expected CCAT rate and the received VCAT traffic.

When in an idle mode, the mobile terminal may avoid a lengthy random access procedure normally associated with responding to a page from a base station, if the base station includes in the page an indication of a resource that the mobile terminal may utilize when responding to the page. Additionally, the mobile terminal may transmit an efficient location update MAC header to a base station, whether prompted to by a page from the base station or not. Furthermore, without leaving the idle mode or a sleep mode, the mobile terminal may exchange short data burst messages with a base station.

  • Publication number: 20110212740
Abstract: To schedule uplink transmission time slots for a collection of mobile communication devices, a set of base station target interference patterns is associated with base stations. A time slot target interference pattern is assigned for each time slot and it repeats after several time slots. The time slot target interference pattern in a given time slot specifies the interference allowed by each time slot to a given base station by any single mobile. A priority index may be determined for each time slot for each mobile associated with the particular base station. The priority index may be based, in part, on a determined correlation between the time-slot target interference patterns and a potential interference profile of a mobile to which a time slot is to be allocated. A mobile's throughput requirement, the throughput already received over a specified past duration, the system fairness requirement, as well as the amount of data available for transmission are also used for evaluating the priority index.
