    Abstract: An improved universal ball joint especially adapted to be used in the transmission of high torque, as in oil field use, includes a driving and driven shaft. One of the shafts, which may be the driving shaft includes a spherical ball received in a housing provided in the other shaft, which may be the driven shaft. The opposed surfaces of the ball and housing include axially extending grooves of essentially the same depth and length forming therebetween a plurality of chambers. Each chamber receives a pin which is tapered at each end and which forms the driving connection between the shafts. The shafts and the ball may include a bore for flow of fluid through the assembly, the ball being sealed in the ball chamber by seals to provide a sealed ball chamber which may be filled with lubricant, the ball being seated on a bearing and retained in the chamber by a retainer member which prevents relative axial movement between the shafts.

    Abstract: An axial bore is defined throughout the hydraulic lift inner barrel. This axial bore is communicated with the interior of the inner tube thereby allowing the interior of the inner tube to be flushed prior to initiation of the coring operation. When the coring operation is begun, flow of drilling fluid to the interior of the inner tube is prevented by allowing a ball dropped within the drill string to seat within a plug through which the communicating axial bore is defined. Once the flow of drilling fluid to the interior of the inner tube is stopped, the coring operation can begin. After the coring operation is completed, a second ball is dropped and allowed to seat within an inner mandrel through which the axial bore of the coring tool is also defined. Once the axial bore of the inner mandrel is closed, drilling fluid is forced into an expansion chamber within a telescopic piston disposed circumferentially outside of the inner mandrel. The piston is connected to the inner tube.

    Abstract: An unconsolidated or loose core is retrieved and retained within a coring tool by wrapping the core with a resilient thin film sleeve. The sleeve is compacted and stored within a concentric cylindrical storage space outside of the core and within the tool. The thin film compacted sleeve is then drawn from the storage space and wrapped about the core. The thin film sleeve is characterized by having a longitudinal length several times greater than the corresponding longitudinal length of the storage space in which it is compacted and stored. More particularly, the thin film sleeve is compactly stored in a cylindrical space defined within an inner tubular mandrel concentric with the core and an outer tubular mandrel concentric with the core. The two mandrels are concentric with each other and spaced apart to form an annular circumferential opening through which the thin film sleeve is disposed and drawn.

The rotary drive means drives an output shaft for connecting to a drill bit, the output shaft being supported by at least one axial bearing which comprises a continuous bearing ring and a retaining ring carrying a plurality of bearing segments which are swivellingly mounted to provide for a spacing of reducing cross-section between the bearing surfaces so that relative rotation of the bearing ring and bearing segments causes fluid to flow into the space and build up a hydrodynamic lubricating film.

    Abstract: An improved bond between diamond and a metallic matrix can be achieved by hot pressing the metallic matrix onto a cleaned polycrystalline diamond (PCD) element. The PCD is degreased and then maintained substantially free from subsequent oxidation. The cleaned nonoxidized PCD is then disposed within a hot press and bonded under pressure and temperature with a conventional metallic matrix to form a cutting element. The cutting element thus formed is comprised of a PCD portion and a metallic portion with a high strength bond formed therebetween, on at least one surface of the diamond and, preferably, two adjacent surfaces. Typically, the metallic matrix is a carbide-forming metal or mixture of carbide-forming metals, and the diamond is a thermally stable porous, sintered polycrystalline product. The insert is subsequently placed within a bit mold and a bit is fabricated according to conventional powder metallurgical infiltration techniques.

    Abstract: A positively driven full closure core catcher for use with soft or unconsolidated cores is comprised of an inner tube shoe into which a plurality of windows have been cut. In each window is a corresponding one of a plurality of flapper valves. The flapper valves are spring-biased to a withdrawn position outside of the interior of the inner tube shoe. A cam member is in sliding contact with an inclined rear surface of the flapper valve. Longitudinal displacement of the cam member with respect to the inclined surface of the flapper valve causes the cam to ride down the inclined surface of the valve thereby forcing the rotatable flapper valve into the interior of the inner tube shoe and into a fully closed position. The cam member is substantially radially fixed and is selectively disengaged from the inner tube shoe to which it is temporarily coupled by a collet assembly. The collet assembly is coupled to a cylinder on which the cam is fixed.

    Abstract: A core spring type core catcher and a full closure core catcher are completely concealed from the core within a coring tool. The full closure catcher is reliably actuated to assume a closed configuration without dependence upon gravity or an interference diametrical fit with the core by use of a cam ring which is longitudinally displaced downwardly within the core barrel by a preloaded compression spring. The full closure core catcher is comprised of a plurality of flapper valves circumferentially disposed outside of the inner tube and concealed by the inner tube or a terminal extension of the inner tube. Disposed above the plurality of flapper valves, and also circumferentially disposed outside of and concentric with the inner tube is a cam ring. Similarly circumferentially disposed outside of and concentric with the inner tube is a preloaded coil compression spring bearing against the cam ring. The cam ring in turn is in sliding contact with a rear surface of each one of the plurality of flapper valves.

    Abstract: A fragmented or unconsolidated core can be cut and retained within a coring tool without substantial disturbance of the core by the use of a shrouded core catcher. A core catcher is concentrically disposed within the coring tool and outside of a smooth, cylindrical sleeve telescopically disposed inside of the core catcher. The core catcher in turn is coupled to a lower assembly which can be selectively longitudinally fixed within the coring tool, but which is otherwise temporarily coupled to the sleeve. As the sleeve is longitudinally pulled upward after the completion of the coring operation, the lower assembly becomes longitudinally fixed within the coring tool and the sleeve, which heretofore has fully covered and concealed the core catcher, begins to be withdrawn from the core catcher, leaving it unconcealed. Ultimately, the core catcher is at least partially uncovered, thereby permitting activation and contact between the core catcher and the core disposed within the coring tool.

    Abstract: Downward displacement of an inner tube with respect to the outer tube in a coring tool is effectuated by an apparatus comprising a bearing assembly, a cylinder, a piston telescopically disposed within the cylinder, and a mechanism for selectively applying an hydraulic force to the piston. The bearing assembly is longitudinally fixed with respect to the outer tube while providing rotational freedom with respect to the outer tube. A cylinder is axially disposed within the coring tool, is connected to the bearing assembly, and hence is rotationally free with respect to the outer tube. The piston, which is telescopically disposed within a cylinder, is downwardly longitudinally displaceable within the cylinder, and hence with respect to the outer tube. A mechanism is incorporated within the coring tool for selectively applying a hydraulic force to the piston in order to longitudinally displace the piston downwardly within the cylinder.

    Abstract: Shortening of the bit life and premature failure of cutting elements on a rotating bit near or at the gage of the bit can be avoided by disposition of the cutting elements at or below a key level on the shoulder-to-gage transition. A first tooth is placed on the shoulder of a rotating bit at the key level. The key level is defined as that point on the shoulder of the rotating bit at which a tooth extends radially from the axis of the rotating bit by a distance substantially equal to the diameter of the bore drilled by the rotating bit as also defined by the gage diameter of the rotating bit. Below the key level the teeth are set on the pads in a staggered pattern that serve to increase effective cutting element concentration. The staggered pattern is repeated within a pad and between pads in selected areas. Distinguishable cutting elements are alternated within the pattern.

    Abstract: The longitudinal position of an inner barrel within a core barrel assembly can be adjusted and locked in the field without necessitating the disassembly of the cartridge cap assembly within the core barrel tool, and therefore without entailing loss of expensive rig time. The inner tube is coupled through a swivel assembly to a cartridge cap. The cartridge cap is threadedly coupled to the coring tool, and in particular to the outer tube. Thus, the cartridge cap is arranged and configured to be rotated, and thus longitudinally adjusted with respect to the outer tube. An upper portion of the cartridge cap is provided with a plurality of radially expanding fingers. A jam nut is disposed within a cylindrical array formed by the fingers, and is threadably engaged with the inside surface of the fingers.

    Abstract: A direct acting slug and wipe tool for use in drill pipe in drilling operations effects a cleaning operation by placing a rib inflated bladder in contact with the inside surface of a drill pipe in connection with a free floating pneumatic chamber. The inflatable bladder is toroidal and circumferentially disposed about and communicates with a sealed and closed chamber filled with a fixed amount or mass of gas. Weights may be added to the wiper in order to fix its equilibrium floating position. The wiper with the inflatable bladder is able to wipe the interior of the drill pipe even through those portions having a reduced inner diameter, such as at the drill pipe joints. Thus, as the drill pipe is tripped, the slug and wipe tool is longitudinally displaced with respect to the drill pipe through a plurality of drill pipe sections.

    Abstract: An improved bearing system for the driven shaft of a downhole motor is shown that provides a main thrust and radial bearing system having means for sealing the bearings in oil at equal or slight pressure above that of the drilling mud inside the drill pipe and insulating the fluid seals and bearings from all possibility of contact with cuttings and debris from the drilling operation. A durable seal having a restricted flow path permitting slow leakage is positioned below the main bearing system in such a relationship to the drilling fluid distribution path that the seals for the oil bath for the bearings are subjected to essentially the same pressure on all sides.

    Abstract: A coring tool, which includes a flexible wire mesh in which the core is disposed, includes a mechanism for maintaining tension on the wire mesh sleeve which then seizes the core disposed within the sleeve, and which serves to retain the core and maintain it under tension. The sleeve is maintained under tension by tensile force transmitted to the sleeve through a stripper tube. The stripper tube is axially disposed through a piston ratchet assembly connected to a piston slidable within the drill string. The piston is resiliently urged upward within the drill string by a return spring but is longitudinally forced downward within the drill string and advanced downwardly with respect to the stripper tube by an increase in pressure within the drill string thereby compressing the return spring.

    Abstract: Down-hole information from rotary well drilling operations is transmitted to a surface or remote location by the venting of drilling fluid from the interior of the drill stem into the bore hole annulus in a binary coded decimal format. A valve is caused to operate by the digital output of one or more down-hole transducers thus releasing and restoring the drilling fluid pressure in the desired sequence. A "sub" contains the necessary electronics, power supply and a motorized valve assembly. Commands from the surface to transmit information from any one of the transducers are transmitted by means of sequential pulses in a binary coded decimal format, in the drilling fluid pressure are provided by the operator by deliberately decreasing and then increasing the surface pump pressure in a sequence to which the applicable down-hole actuating means is responsive.
