Abstract: The invention provides, in some aspects, methods for electronic document distribution that permit automatic transmittal of a set of documents to one or more recipients. The set includes documents pre-existing at the time the distribution is specified, as well as at least one that is subsequently created. Such “mixed-mode” distribution can be used, for example, to effect automatic distribution of pre-existing word processing documents (or spreadsheets, etc.), along with a newly scanned document, e.g., a hand-written note. Distribution of the documents is triggered by creation of the latter document—in this example, the scanned hand-written note.

Abstract: In one aspect, the invention provides a content handling system that comprises a digital data store containing a plurality of instruction sets, each defining a content handling workflow. The system further includes a content handling engine in communications coupling with the store, wherein the content handling engine identifies an embedded code in an article of content. The engine executes on at least that article of content one or more of the instruction sets associated with the embedded code. The instruction set can specify, for example, one or more destinations for articles of content (e.g., e-mail addresses, local or network file system folders, and on-line data stores).

Abstract: Systems and methods are described which provide handling and secure routing of an article of content in accordance with a code or instruction set identifier embedded in or associated with the article of content. In one aspect, the invention provides a content handling system that comprises a digital data store containing a plurality of instruction sets, each defining a content handling workflow. Abstract: A secure fax transmission system can be used to assure the intended recipient of a confidential document being sent via facsimile is the only person that will have access to the document once it is sent. An application module communicates with a client user interface over a first network and communicates with a recipient fax machine over a second network. The application module receives information associated with a confidential document being sent via facsimile. Prior to sending the document, the application module determines if the recipient fax number has been previously registered as a secure fax number. The application module then sends the document to the recipient if the recipient fax number is registered a secure. If the recipient fax number is not registered as secure, the application module sends a request for registration to the recipient fax number.

Abstract: The secure messaging system of the invention encrypts an electronic document using a symmetric key and transmits the encrypted document and related message parameters to a recipient whose identity is then authenticated by a web server. The web server dynamically regenerates the symmetric key from a hidden key and from the message parameters accompanying the encrypted document, and thus avoids having to maintain a central repository of encrypted documents as required by typical “post and pick-up” encrypted messaging systems. Further, an audit trail produced while practicing the invention provides timestamped message digest data for a plurality of time intervals, where the message digests for adjacent time intervals are computationally linked together. The audit trail effectively enables timestamped message digest data to verify not only the existence of a document during a first time interval, but also to verify the existence of documents encountered in a prior time interval.
