Abstract: A heat sink for use with a high output LED light source is disclosed. The heat sink is used with an LED and conical reflector. The heat sink has a cylindrical back end holding the light emitting diode. The heat sink includes a conically shaped wall having an inner and outer surface and an open front end. The open front end has a rim with notches. The reflector has a front flat surface with arms which are fixed in the notches with a fastener. The heat sink includes a plurality of slits formed on the inner and outer surfaces extending between the back and front ends. A plurality of vanes extend radially from the inner surface. The heat sink is fabricated from a thermally conductive material. The conical shape of the heat sink, the slits and vanes increases exposed surface area to assist in dissipating heat generated from the LED.

  • Publication number: 20100091507
Abstract: A high intensity light is disclosed. A first circular lighting array having a plurality of reflectors and light emitting diodes is provided. A second circular lighting array is mounted on the first circular lighting array. The second circular lighting array has a second plurality of reflectors and light emitting diodes. Each reflector includes a tulip-shaped reflective surface having a symmetrical vertical cross section and a different symmetrical horizontal cross section. The reflective surface creates a uniform beam reflecting from a corresponding LED at horizontal angles relative to the reflective surface and a narrow beam in vertical angles relative to the reflective surface.

  • Patent number: 7300185
Abstract: A reflector for focusing light emitted from a light source in a generally planar direction is disclosed. The reflector is matched with the light source that is preferably a light emitting diode (LED) mounted on a substrate. The reflector is mounted over the LED on the substrate. The reflector is made of a clear material. The reflector has a semi-cylindrical front surface and a back surface with an indentation that is compatible with the light source. The reflector has a top reflecting surface divided into two quadrants and a bottom reflecting surface divided into two quadrants. The top quadrants and bottom quadrants are symmetrical in shape and reflect light emitted from the light source in a substantially horizontal plane. The reflecting surfaces may be TIR based or they may be coated with a reflective material in order to focus light from the LED.

  • Publication number: 20070249800
Abstract: We disclose a new concept to realize emitter color control through the control of conjugation length of the partially conjugated poly(phenylenevinylene) (PCPPV) emitter using the conjugation limited atoms in their polymer backbone. Silicon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur are used as the conjugation limitation atoms. The emitting color of PCPPV depends on the conjugation length. For example, PCPPV with a short conjugation length can emit blue color. Increasing the conjugation length, the emitting color can change to longer spectral band such as green and red color. This new concept enables the color tuning for the realization of white light emitting polymer without any complicated fabrication process. The white light emitter can be realized via simple mixing of different color PCPPV emitters and can also be realized through random copolymerization of PCPPV with moderated monomer feeding ratios.

  • Patent number: 7217022
Abstract: An exterior lighting device based on a light emitting diode in conjunction with an optic fiber is disclosed. The device has a cylindrical housing having a closed end and an open end. The light emitting diode is placed on the interior of the on the closed end of the cylindrical housing. A clear lens having one end in proximity with the light emitting diode and an opposite end with a flat surface is provided. A top cap is installed over the open end of the cylindrical housing. The top cap forms a water tight seal with the cylindrical housing using O-rings. A retaining plate is held in place between the top cap and the cylindrical housing. The retaining plate is locked with the flat surface of the lens thus holding the lens in place over the light emitting diode. An optic fiber has a receiving end held by the retaining plate in proximity to the light emitting diode and an opposite emitting end extending from a socket in the top cap.

  • Publication number: 20070086309
Abstract: This invention describes a novel coding and implementation techniques for high-speed high-density optical disk data storage. Multiple narrowband spectral beams, either coherent or non-coherent, are combined together by optical fiber couplers or lenses assembly and are then focused into a photosensitive film with diffraction limited spot size through a specially designed hybrid diffractive/refractive lens with extended depth of focus, so that the beam size remains diffraction limited size in the whole depth of the recording medium volume. Multiple reflection gratings which are respectively corresponding to these used spectral bands are recorded in the medium through interferences between the incident beams and the reflected beams from a reflection mirror which is attached at the back surface of the recording film.

  • Patent number: 7182496
Abstract: A multiple LED based lighting device for commercial indoor or outdoor architectural applications is disclosed. The lighting device uses multiple LEDs which are arranged in a symmetrical array in order to combine their light output. The LEDs are supported in a fixed position and have a conical reflector to assist in focusing the light output. A heat sink is attached to the LEDs to allow for use of high power for greater light output. The multiple LEDs are mounted relative to an optic fiber which has a core and cladding material to retain light based on total internal reflection. The light output from the LEDs are cast on the optic fiber which may provide side lighting effects from the perimeter of the optic fiber or emit light from the opposite end of the optic fiber.
