The apparatus further comprises a processing unit (104) configured to calculate a density of the sample (101) based on the data set obtained by the X-ray geological structure data unit, the fluorescent radiation measured by the fluorescence detectors, and the weight provided by the weighing unit.

    Abstract: A sample holder for holding a sample comprising a drill core sample or drill cuttings during X-ray transmission measurements and fluorescence measurements is disclosed. The sample holder comprises a confining structure having an axial direction and being adapted to, during measurement, at least partially enclose the sample and to restrict movement of the sample in a direction intersecting the axial direction. The confining structure comprises at least one region facing away from the axial direction and allowing exciting radiation impinging on, and fluorescent radiation emanating from, the sample during measurement to pass therethrough. An apparatus adapted for receiving such a sample holder is also disclosed, comprising a ray source, an X-ray transmission detector, a fluorescence detector and rotating means for rotating at least one of the sample holder, the X-ray source, the X-ray transmission detector and the fluorescence detector.

    Abstract: An apparatus and a method for X-ray fluorescence analysis of a mineral sample is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an X-ray source (2) for generating an X-ray beam to irradiate the mineral sample; at least one fluorescence detector (4,5) for measuring fluorescent radiation emitted by the mineral sample when irradiated by the X-ray beam; and a processing unit for providing an analysis of the mineral sample based on the measurements made by the at least one fluorescence detector (4,5). Further, the apparatus comprises a sample container (3) arranged to hold the mineral sample during the irradiation, wherein the sample container is arranged to provide at least two different irradiation paths through said mineral sample during irradiation. An advantage with this arrangement is that it enables analysis of elements having a wide range of atomic numbers in a single sample with improved reliability and accuracy.
