    Abstract: An elongated member is used to create tension to move teeth en masse to correct Class II and Class III malocclusions. The elongated member has a constant force spring that, when stretched, provides tension along the elongated member. A mesial end of the elongated member is attached to a bridge assembly which is attached to a row of teeth, and a distal end of the elongated member is attached to an anchor. The spring member provides a constant tension which moves the bridge assembly, and hence the row of teeth, a precalibrated distance.

Distal and mesial side surfaces of the bracket base are perpendicular to the archwire slot to allow a rotational device to apply rotational force to a tooth perpendicular to the archwire with direct vector-line guidance. Occlusal and gingival edges of the bracket base between the tie wings are scooped-out or recessed to provide more space to receive a tool under an elastic ligature, and select corners of the tie wings are beveled enlarging space to facilitate entry of instruments for removing wire ligatures, to facilitate instrument access for removal and replacement of ligatures, while streamlining tooth rotation to make arch correction more efficient.

    Abstract: The orthodontic appliance is metal injection molded as a unitary bracket, and is a made of a Stellite cobalt chromium alloy composition formulated to be substantially nickel-free, containing less than 1% nickel, in order to alleviate nickel allergic reactions experienced by a small fraction of the population to nickel. While nickel improved hardness of the bracket, the elements of chromium and molybdenum in the proposed alloy for the bracket also contribute to hardness of the alloy. The orthodontic bracket comprises a unitary metal injection molded body including a bonding base adapted to adhere to a tooth surface, and an archwire slot adapted for receiving an archwire. The preferred composition consists essentially of 59-69% by weight cobalt, 26-30% by weight chromium, 4-8% by weight molybdenum, and 2% or less by weight trace elements. The bonding base has a bottom base pattern in the form of a plurality of rectangular or square pockets that are approximately 0.005 to 0.015 inch in size.

    Abstract: A palatal arch expander assembly provides low, constant expansion forces to the palatal arch and provides individual corrective forces to either the first or second molars. A shape memory or superelastic archwire can be cooled below its transition temperature so that it is easily bendable for insertion into the mouth. After insertion, the archwire warms to a temperature above its transition temperature and provides low, continual expansion forces throughout the treatment period without requiring further adjustment. A pair of adjustment wires are bendable and provide individual corrective forces to either the first or second molars. The adjustment wires can be readjusted at any point during the treatment period. The archwire can be formed from a nickel-titanium alloy wire or superelastic material and the adjustment wires can be formed from nicoloy, stainless steel, or similar metal wire.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to an orthodontic bracket assembly having a trapezoidal configuration for ease of positioning and aligning the bracket on the tooth. The bracket assembly comprises a pair of tie wings, each having non-parallel mesial and distal edges and further having an occlusal edge substantially parallel to the occlusal plane and to the sight line of the archwire slot. The edges of the tie wings form sight lines that intersect at a focal point located at the tip of the root tooth to assist in positioning the bracket. The edges of the tie wings also are substantially parallel to the tooth edges to assist in aligning and positioning the bracket on the tooth. Further, a V groove is provided along the longitudinal axis of the bracket and forms a sight line that also intersects the focal point to facilitate alignment of the bracket during mounting.
