  • Patent number: 6086074
Abstract: A steering lock mechanism for a steerable axle assembly. The mechanism includes a fluid-actuated pin mounted within a cylinder. The cylinder is carried by a plate attached to a steerable wheel end. The pin carried by the cylinder has a tapered end which engages a tapered hole. When these tapered components are in engagement, steering motion of the steerable wheel end is prevented. The mechanism has several significant features, one of which is a fail-safe design in which a mechanical spring urges the pin to assume an extended or locking position in the event of failure of the pneumatic actuating system. The mechanism is designed so that the pin will find the hole as the steered wheels sweep past the straight ahead position, in the event of a failure of the fluid actuation system used to retract the pin.

  • Patent number: 5820258
Abstract: An improved cement-mixing drum support and drive arrangement is disclosed herein. Such an arrangement can be used with a cement-mixing drum of the type incorporated in a self-propelled mobile cement mixer, a stationary cement mixer, or a trailer-supported cement mixer. The drum support provides an axis of rotation for the driven end of the drum, wherein the motor which generates the energy to rotate the drum can move with the driven end of the drum in response to deflections of the drum relative to the structure supporting the drum. In particular, the shaft which supports the driven end of the drum is rotatably supported by a bearing, wherein the bearing is permitted to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the rotational axis of the bearing. This may be provided by using a bearing supported by a universal-type joint.

  • Patent number: 5765624
Abstract: A iron-based material such as cast iron is made by a process wherein filler particles are added to an iron base metal, as the base metal is poured into the mold. Pieces containing ceramic filler particles held together by a binder can be disposed in the mold prior to pouring molten iron base metal therein. Molten iron base metal is then poured into the mold so that the molten base metal contacts the pieces, gradually dissolving the filler. The filler becomes distributed throughout the molten base metal within the mold. Upon cooling, the base metal has the filler distributed therein, resulting in a iron-based material. The resulting material is particularly useful for making vehicle parts normally made of cast iron or steel.

  • Patent number: 5501567
Abstract: This invention pertains to a combined refuse vehicle and refuse side loaded and recycling curbside collector vehicle. Recycled materials may be placed either in (i) a hopper which is elevated and tilted to discharge into the upper, open end of a recycling bin or (ii) to elevate roller cart vehicles into an upper loading position. In either event, the bins are side tilted and displaced transversely of the vehicle axis for roll-off clearance. Refuse is loaded at curbside level and forced into a packer body from the body up whereby previously charged refuse acts to compress subsequently charged refuse. A tag axle-drive axle system is disclosed which, by means of a proportioning valve, causes the legal loads on the tag axle-drive axle combination to be reached simultaneously.
