Patent number: 8904132Abstract: Systems and methods for replicating data from a first site to a second site remote from said first site are described. An embodiment includes storing compressed data on a hard disk appliance, reading said data without decompressing said data, sending said data over a wide-area-network (WAN) in a compressed state, and storing said data on a second hard disk appliance remote from said first hard disk appliance in its compressed state without performing an additional compression operation.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: December 2, 2014Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: Dennis Desimone, Michael H. Reider, Kenneth Geist, Victoria Gonzalez

Patent number: 8856233Abstract: Peer-to-peer redundant file server system and methods include clients that determine a target storage provider to contact for a particular storage transaction based on a pathname provided by the filesystem and a predetermined scheme such as a hash function applied to a portion of the pathname. Servers use the same scheme to determine where to store relevant file information so that the clients can locate the file information. The target storage provider may store the file itself and/or may store metadata that identifies one or more other storage providers where the file is stored. A file may be replicated in multiple storage providers, and the metadata may include a list of storage providers from which the clients can select (e.g., randomly) in order to access the file.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: October 7, 2014Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: Francesco Lacapra, Peter Wallace Steele, Bruno Sartirana, Ernest Ying Sue Hua, I Chung Joseph Lin, Samuel Sui-Lun Li, Nathanael John Diller, Thomas Reynold Ramsdell, Don Nguyen, Kyle Dinh Tran

Patent number: 8782661Abstract: A file system that balances the loading of filers and the capacity of drives that are associated with the filers is described. The file system includes a first disk drive that includes a first unused capacity and a second disk drive that includes a second unused capacity, wherein the second unused capacity is smaller than the first unused capacity. The file system further includes a first filer that is configured to fill requests from clients through access to at least the first disk drive. The file system further includes a second filer that is configured to fill requests from clients through access to at least the second disk drive. The second filer is configured to select an infrequently accessed file from the second disk drive and to push the infrequently accessed files to the first disk drive, thereby improving a balance of unused capacity between the first and second disk drives without substantially affecting a loading for each of the first and second filers.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2005Date of Patent: July 15, 2014Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: Thomas R. Ulrich, James R. Schweitzer, Gregory D. Bolstad, Jay G. Randall, John R. Staub

Patent number: 8751759Abstract: Disk based emulation of tape libraries is provided with features that allow easier management and administration of a backup system and also allow increased flexibility to both archive data on tape at a remote location and also have fast restore access to archived data files. Features include automatic emulation of physical libraries, and the retention and write protection of virtual tapes that correspond to exported physical tapes.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2012Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: Victoria Gonzalez, Sergio Encarnacao

Patent number: 8731897Abstract: A data protection and storage system includes an array of disk drives for data storage. Data is received for storage on the disk drive via an interface that is configured to emulate a tape drive interface. A virtual tape data structure is created and stored on the disk drives. The allocated capacity of the virtual tape is dynamically and transparently alterable in response to data storage demand within the virtual tape.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2010Date of Patent: May 20, 2014Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: John E. Matze, Michael H. Reider, Kenneth David Geist, Daniel Morgan Davies

Patent number: 8589449Abstract: A network storage system comprises data storage, one or more file system APIs, and a metadata handler. The data storage can comprise file data and associated metadata. The file system APIs can be configured to read and write file data and metadata to and from the data storage. The metadata handler can have a library of functions for handling the metadata. The library can include a metadata blob creation function and a metadata blob extraction function. The metadata blob creation function cooperates with the file system APIs to read source metadata associated with specified file data and creates and populates a metadata blob from which a substantial copy of the source metadata can be generated. The metadata blob extraction function receives at least a metadata blob, extracts information from the metadata blob, and cooperates with the file system APIs to generate destination metadata, a substantial copy of the source metadata.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2008Date of Patent: November 19, 2013Assignee: Overland Storage, Inc.Inventors: Marc Kaplan, Ravi Wijayaratne, Kevin Osborn, Dan Burrows
