Patent number: 6063223Abstract: A dual chamber flexible tube dispensing package is formed by providing a pair of plastic parisons, blow molding each parison to form a tube having a rigid finish, a shoulder adjacent the finish and a flexible body extending from the shoulder with a closed lower end; each tube having a generally D-shaped cross section throughout the finish, shoulder and body; each tube having an arcuate wall and a generally flat wall; and bringing the flat walls into abutting relationship. Each tube has a thread such that when the flat walls are in abutting relation, the thread on one tube form continuous thread with the thread of the other tube. In another form of dual chamber dispensing package, each tube has a plurality of vertically spaced integral ribs which extend transversely. The ribs on one tube are staggered relative to the ribs on the other tube so that when the tubes are brought into engagement, the ribs on one tube engage the ribs on the other tube and the shoulders are in abutment.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: Christian W. Patent number: 6048192Abstract: A method and apparatus for blow molding plastic articles which utilizes one or more fixed needles and one or more micro vents associated with a blow mold cavity. Each needle has a first passage associated therewith through which vacuum is supplied to pull the molten plastic about the needle and a second passage therein through which air under pressure is introduced to tear the plastic and blow the article to the confines of the mold which has been closed about the plastic parison. Micro vents facilitate exhausting air which is about the parison. Preferably the second passage for compressed air is provided by a central bore and the first passage for the vacuum is provided by an annular space about the fixed needle. In a modified form, the fixed needle comprises dual air passages. Provision is made for utilizing plural molds with controls for supplying air and vacuum.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1998Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: Daniel F. Patent number: 5976452Abstract: A method and apparatus wherein an extruder provides extruded plastic parisons to a first and second horizontally movable blow mold assemblies, and each blow mold assembly includes two sets of blow molds, and each set includes a pair of blow mold halves. The blow mold halves are closed about the tubular parisons and moved to one of two blow molding stations where a blow pin at the blow molding station blows the parison to form a hollow blow molded article. More specifically, four platens are provided in each blow mold assembly. A first pair of outer and inner platens supports the first pair of blow mold halves and a second pair of outer and inner platens supports the second pair of blow mold halves. A pair of tie rods passes through all four platens. The first outer platen is attached to the ends of the tie rods. The second outer platen is moved by a mechanism such as a cylinder or toggle mechanism for movement on the tie rods.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventor: Todd W. Patent number: 5941422Abstract: A combined drain back spout (DBS) fitment and plastic container assembly comprising a plastic container body and finish and a plastic drain back spout fitment having a pour spout connected to a surrounding drain gutter and spill-catching apron. The fitment apron has an integral mounting collar with a radial flange spanning the finish end edge and a collar skirt dependent therefrom and encircling the outer surface of the container finish and being sealably joined thereto by a spin weld joint. The lower free end edge of collar skirt is closely spaced from the juxtaposed surface of the container body, and the collar skirt and finish exterior surface conjointly define an intervening space for receiving, containing and hiding spin weld slag and/or shavings. The finish is corrugated to provide annular external ribs and intervening external grooves to thereby provide sacrificial parent spin weld material in the rib crowns and slag-receiving spaces in the grooves.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1998Date of Patent: August 24, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventor: Douglas S. Patent number: 5928581Abstract: In a blow-molding system in which a parison programmer is coupled to orifice tooling in an extrusion die head for controlling wall thickness of an extruded parison fed to a blow-molding apparatus, a method of synchronizing operation of the parison programmer contemplates placement of observable indicia on the parison after the parison exits the die head. This indicia placement preferably is carried out under control of the parison programmer to place the indicia at a predetermined position along the parison profile, such that mis-positioning of the indicia indicates absence of phase synchronization of the parison programmer. The indicia is then observed on a molded article to determine phasing of the parison programmer relative to the molding apparatus, and operation of the parison programmer is adjusted to correct any mis-positioning.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastics Products Inc.Inventors: John Philip Dinkel, William W. Brecheisen

Patent number: 5908124Abstract: A plastic tube with an integral finish and a twist off tab are blow molded. The twist off tab is connected to the finish of the tube by an annular groove forming a line of weakness. The tab is formed by the closing of mold halves about an extruded parison to form a flat twist off tab connected by a thin membrane to the exterior of the finish. The tab is then blow molded to form the tube. After the mold halves are opened, the twist-off tab is trimmed to provide the finished tube. The tab is formed by a conventional blow molding process without the need of a secondary operation. A plurality of blow molded corrugations are provided between annular blow molded ribs on the finish and provide added strength to the finish to facilitate removal of the tab.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1997Date of Patent: June 1, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: Christian W.
