Publication number: 20210356667Abstract: A cleaving tool is provided for cleaving ribbon fibres with two or more optical fibres. The cleaving tool has a cutting assembly, and a clamping means with a datum plane and at least one clamping portion. The clamping means is configured to clamp two or more of the optical fibres against the datum plane; and the clamping means is configured to apply an equal clamping force to each of the optical fibres within the ribbon fibre.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2019Publication date: November 18, 2021Applicant: OXFORD FIBER LTDInventors: Ian MURGATROYD, Edward John Phillip Kearney, Kazimierz Krzysztof WOJEWODA, Ivo Anthony RADICE

Publication number: 20190278025Abstract: A method for terminating an optical fiber in a connector, using a device includes: (a) positioning a stripped external fiber in a fiber retainer slidably attached to the chassis; (b) sliding the stripped fiber and their retainer to a first position closely adjoining the cleaver; (c) cleaving the bare portion of the fiber to form a cleaved end; (d) sliding the fiber retainer away from the cleaver; (e) causing to be presented a connector; (f) sliding the fiber retainer to a second position along the channel of the chassis, thereby causing the cleaved end to extend into the guide of the connector; (g) actuating the connector while the fiber retainer is at the second position to clamp the cleaved end in the connector and optionally crimping a deformable member which acts to further attach the connector to the fiber cable.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 7, 2019Publication date: September 12, 2019Applicant: OXFORD FIBER LTDInventors: Ian Murgatroyd, Edward John Phillip Kearney

Patent number: 9933571Abstract: A method for cleaving one or more optical fiber(s) at an angle to the optic axis is provided and includes clamping the optical fiber(s) with its coating stripped to expose its distal end. An axial force and/or a bending force is applied to the optical fiber to create internal stresses in the fiber. A sharp blade is provided in an orientation such the blade edge is perpendicular to the optical fiber. The blade is further orientated such that a plane bisecting the blade angle formed between two polished surfaces of the blade is slanted relative to the longitudinal axis of the fiber. The at least one optical fiber is scratched with the sharp blade to create a non-perpendicular cleave having a controlled shape in the region of the scratch. A method of splicing the fibers and a tool for cleaving the fibers are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2013Date of Patent: April 3, 2018Assignee: Oxford Fiber Ltd.Inventor: Ian Murgatroyd

Patent number: 8069691Abstract: A method of cleaving an optical fiber and apparatus therefor including a hand tool wherein the optical fiber to be cleaved (6) has a natural path. The method of cleaving includes deflecting the optical fiber (6) away from its natural path in a first direction and at a point spaced longitudinal along the length of the fiber deflecting the optical fiber in a second direction opposed to the first direction. The opposing deflection induce internal stresses in the fiber that extend substantially across the core of the optical fiber over a region of the length of the optical fiber. The fiber may then be scratched in this region with a cleaving blade (5) so as to induce cleaving of the optical fiber. The cleaving is controlled by controlling the internal stresses induced in the fiber by in turn controlling the degree of deflection induced in the fiber. Further the fiber (6) may be placed under extension to assist in the control of the stresses induced.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2006Date of Patent: December 6, 2011Assignee: Oxford Fiber Ltd.Inventor: Ian Murgatroyd
