  • Patent number: 6459383
Abstract: A communication system between remote locations connected by a common wire conductor where AC power (40) is supplied from one location to one or more remote locations (32 and 34). At the remote locations, inductor coil components (28,32) and (30,34) provide power to an instrument (24,26). The AC power is modulated with surface selected discrete frequencies (56) to operate a specific selected remote location. At the selected remote location (24), the AC power is rectified and a logic processor detects the discrete frequencies for that location and operates the instrument. Data from the instrument is translated by current modulation (60) which is demodulated at the one location (50,64,66,68,70).

  • Patent number: 5749417
Abstract: A production log which is developed by data recorded in a downhole memory in a well tool as a function of real time and data recorded at the earth's surface as a function of time and merged to produce a log of data as a function of depth. The well tool is moved with a velocity selected to obtain fluid velocity data as a function of time and the velocity of the tool is measured at the earth's surface as a function of time. The functions of time are on a common basis so that a true velocity of fluid flow can be obtained as a function of depth.

  • Patent number: 5554804
Abstract: A pressure and temperature system for monitoring pressure and temperature conditions in a permanent installation in a high temperature production well traversing earth formations where the system in a pressure tool incorporates a programmable logic array device and a low density memory device. Each of a number of independent pressure tools is programmed to respond to a distinct digital polling signal for selecting a particular tool so that a single wire conductor can be used for data and control signal communication between the pressure tools placed downhole and a computer system situated at the earth surface. The system in a tool is powered up and down for each selected operation to conserve individual component useful life and the number of downhole components subject to high temperature is minimized.

  • Patent number: 5457988
Abstract: A system for providing D.C. power at the earth's surface to a downhole well tool in a case hardened side pocket mandrel using an inductive coupling system where the mandrel has a pressure sealed probe member sealingly attached in a side pocket of the mandrel. The probe member extends externally to a cable conductor and is enclosed in a protective housing. A surface located D.C. power source is connected by the cable to a downhole square wave oscillator with a full wave driver to power an inductive coil in the probe member. The end socket of the tool has an inductive coil connected to a full wave rectifier in the tool for providing power to the tool. Pressure sensors in the tool are used to develop frequency shifted key signals to the cable via the inductive coils which provide a digital current modulation and which is detected at the earth's surface.

Abstract: System for the input and output of data on a two wire system with a downhole well tool which has a system with sensor devices, a processor, a clock, a memory and a voltage/current communications device which are all powered by a d.c. battery. A phone jack and phone plug connection at the earth's surface enables an operator with a controller to input and output data to the well tool without disassembly and enables setting the clock in the well tool to a selected real time value. • Patent number: 5207767
Abstract: A dual capacitor device for utilizing dependent capacitances for measurement purposes where a first capacitor base member and a second capacitance base member are arranged with parallel capacitor surfaces in parallel planes and where the parallel capacitor surfaces are located on opposite sides relative to a central transverse plane to define first and second capacitors. The second capacitor base member has a centrally located section connected to an outer section of the second capacitor base member by a torsion beam and the centrally located section is attached to the first capacitor base member by a coupling member. Angular displacement of the outer section relative to the centrally located section about the displacement axis produces a capacitance change in the first and second capacitors.

  • Patent number: 5168419
Abstract: A dual capacitor device for utilizing dependent capacitances for measurement purposes where an upper capacitor base member and a lower capacitance base member are arranged with parallel capacitor surfaces in horizontal planes and where the parallel capacitor surfaces are located on opposite sides relative to a vertical axis to define first and second capacitors. The lower capacitor base member has a centrally located section connected to an outer section of the lower capacitor base member by a torsion beam and the centrally located section is attached to the upper capacitor base member by a vertical arm member. The torsion beam means has a displacement axis normal to the central axis so that angular displacement of the torsion beam and the centrally located section about the displacement axis produces a capacitance change in the first and second capacitors.

  • Patent number: 5142913
Abstract: A transducer for measuring a moment force as a related function of pressure and tension where a spirally wound bourdon tube has a confined end arrayed to apply a moment force to pretensioned metal vibratory elements. The change in tension in the pretensioned vibratory elements produces a change in frequency which is related to pressure in the bourdon tube. The vibratory elements are maintained at equally applied tension so that a temperature change changes the frequency of the vibrating elements and can be utilized to correct pressure measurements.

  • Patent number: 4924701
Abstract: A pressure measurement system comprising a capacitance device whose outer interrelated capacitance plates are maintained in a relatively fixed position relative to one another while an intermediate capacitance plate responds to temperature. The plates are in a restricted enclosure containing a gas dielectric medium. The pressure of the gas dielectric medium (and consequently the density of the gas) is controlled as a function of a pressure to be measured. By measurement of capacitance relationships as a function of the temperature and density of the gas dielectric medium, a pressure measurement is obtained. The system is constructed with like types of materials where the capacitance device is in an enclosure chamber which is immersed in a pressure media. The capacitance device is constructed with a symmetrical arrangement to balance out effects of gravity or vibration. Construction of micro components utilizes an electrostatic bonding system which eliminated arcing during bonding.
