  • Publication number: 20050185149
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for enhancing brightness and contrast in images provided by a projection-based presenter utilising a display panel (5) illuminated by at least one scrolling band of light and a lamp (3) as a light source for said at least one scrolling band of light. In order to enable such an enhancement, it is proposed that the method comprises modulating the light output of the lamp (3) between different scrolling positions in a way that a higher light intensity is supplied by said lamp (3) when parts of the display panel (5) currently representing brighter parts of a respective image are illuminated by said at least one scrolling band of light than when parts of the display panel (5) currently representing less bright parts of said image are illuminated by said at least one scrolling band of light. The invention relates equally to a corresponding projector, and to an image processor and a regulation and controlling system for such a projector.

  • Patent number: 6387720
Abstract: A waveguide structure and method of making a waveguide for communicating optical signals is provided. The waveguide structure is made using standard CMOS fabrication operations and is integrated on the same chip having digital CMOS circuitry. An example method of making the waveguide includes forming a contact through a dielectric layer down to a substrate and coating sidewalls of the contact with a first metallization coating. The contact is then filled with a dielectric material. A partial waveguide structure is formed over the first metallization coating and the dielectric material of the contact. The partial waveguide structure is defined by a waveguide dielectric structure and a second metallization coating that is defined over the waveguide dielectric structure. A third metallization coating is then formed to define spacers along sides of the partial waveguide structure, the first metallization coating, the second metallization coating.

  • Patent number: 6359394
Abstract: A ballast for powering a high intensity discharge lamp includes at least one voltage divider for sampling a lamp operating condition and producing a sampled signal based on a scaling factor applied to the sampled lamp operating condition. The ballast also includes a controller for driving an inverter in response to the sampled signal. The scaling factor varies based on the mode of lamp operation and is substantially larger during lamp ignition than during steady state lamp operation.

  • Patent number: 6137542
Abstract: A circuit for gamma correcting a video signal incorporates both linear approximation as well as a look-up table, in which the disadvantages of linear approximation, i.e., inaccurate representation of the gamma function, and of a gamma look-up table, i.e., low resolution at low grey levels, are minimized. The transfer function of the look-up table is chosen such that the inaccuracies of the linear approximation are compensated.

  • Patent number: 5818934
Abstract: A method for providing a secure interface between a decryption engine and a system decoder of a digital receiver, e.g., an MPEG-2 digital television receiver. The system decoder receives an encrypted bitstream and produces a cipher text bitstream which is supplied to the decryption engine via a first parallel data bus which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the cipher text bitstream. The decryption engine decrypts the cipher text bitstream and produces a plain text bitstream which is supplied to the system decoder via a second parallel data bus which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the plain text bitstream.

  • Patent number: 5544190
Abstract: A II-VI semiconductor diode laser has a II-VI semiconductor structure disposed atop a semiconductor substrate and covered with a contact layer. A current-blocking layer is disposed on top of this contact layer. The current-blocking layer has an etched groove extending therethrough, to expose a stripe of the contact layer. A metal electrode layer contacts the current-blocking layer and extends into the etched groove to contact the exposed stripe of the contact layer. The current-blocking layer confines the current flow between the metal electrode layer and the contact layer to the stripe of the contact layer exposed by the etched groove.
