    Abstract: A process for producing high cis-1,4-polybutadienes using a catalyst system based on a rare earth compound that exhibits improved catalytic activity is provided which process comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in a polymerization medium comprising a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature of from about 0.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst system which is a mixture of (1) a rare earth carboxylate selected from the group of neodymium carboxylates wherein the carboxylate has from 4 to 12 carbon atoms, (2) an alkyl aluminum chloride selected from the group of compounds represented by the formulae R.sup.2 AlCl.sub.2, R.sup.2.sub.3 Al.sub.2 Cl.sub.3 and R.sup.2.sub.2 AlCl wherein R.sup.2 is a hydrocarbon residue having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and (3) an organo aluminum compound of the formula R.sup.3.sub.2 AlH wherein R.sup.

    Abstract: There is provided a process for the preparation of a high cis-1,4-polybutadiene with a reduced microgel content wherein a novel catalyst system consisting of (1) a nickel salt of a carboxylic acid, (2) a mixture of triethyl aluminum and an organoaluminum compound having the formula R.sub.3 Al, said mixture having an average composition Et.sub.3-x R.sub.x Al wherein Et is an ethyl group, x is a numeral from 0.1 to 2.9 and R is an alkyl group having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, and (3) a boron trifluoride etherate is used to polymerize 1,3-butadiene in an inert hydrocarbon.

    Abstract: An improved process is provided for the recovery of a polymer from a solution thereof in a process wherein the polymer solution is contacted with hot water and steam to yield a slurry in water of polymer particles and a vapor stream comprising water vapor and the solvent, the slurry in water of polymer particles is passed to means to grossly separate the polymer particles and the water and the polymer particles are dried, wherein the water contains small particles of polymer and a portion thereof is mixed with the original polymer solution and the remaining portion is passed to the vessel wherein the polymer solution is first contacted with hot water and steam.

C. in the presence of a catalyst system which is a mixture of (1) a substantially anhydrous divalent cobalt salt, (2) diethyl aluminum chloride or ethyl aluminum sesquichloride and (3) an organo aluminum compound of the formula R.sub.3 Al wherein R is an alkyl group having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and, optionally triethylaluminum, the molar ratio of chloride in the diethyl aluminum chloride plus (3) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1 and the molar ratio of chloride in the ethyl aluminum sesquichloride plus (3) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1.

    Abstract: A process for preparing linear block and three arm star block copolymers having blocks of polyisobutylene and blocks of anionically polymerizable monomers comprises mixing a first solution of a polyisobutylene having a number average molecular weight of from about 4,000 to about 60,000 and having from 1 to 3 terminal allylic halogens with a second solution of a living alkali metal terminated polymer having a number average molecular weight of from about 4,000 to about 60,000 in relative proportions at a temperature of from about 10.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. for a period of time of from about 30 minutes to about 24 hours whereby a significant amount of linear block or three arm star block copolymer is formed. A polyisobutylene having from 1 to 3 terminal allylic halogens is provided and a process for preparing said polyisobutylene.

    Abstract: A halogenated polymer analogous to halogenated butyl rubber is prepared by a process wherein a monomer charge comprising isobutylene, and a conjugated diolefin having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 which may be the same or different are a methyl group or a hydrogen atom and X is bromine or chlorine together with a initiator having the formula ##STR2## wherein each R.sub.4 may be the same or different is a alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms and n is a positive whole number are introduced into a suitable reaction vessel in a specified ratio at a temperature of from about -90.degree. to -10.degree.C., a solution of a Lewis acid is added and the monomers are copolymerized at said temperature to form said halogenated polymer, and the halogenated polymer is recovered from solution.

    Abstract: A process for grafting halogenated butyl rubbers with polymers based on conjugated diolefin monomers is provided which comprises mixing a first solution of halogenated butyl rubber with a second solution of a living alkali metal terminated polymer based on conjugated diolefin monomers and having a number average molecular weight of at least 40,000 at a temperature of from about -10.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. for a period of time of from about 30 minutes to about 24 hours whereby the graft copolymer is formed. Rubber compositions comprising the halogenated butyl rubber graft copolymers upon vulcanization exhibit improved abrasion resistance and wet skid resistance while a desirable balance of other physical properties is maintained.

A process for the production of the rubbery polymer is provided together with a rubber composition comprising the rubbery polymer and at least one diene-based polymer.
