  • Patent number: 10119756
Abstract: A method and backup system for backing up a supply oxygen in an air separation plant in which during normal operation, a stream of oxygen-rich liquid is pumped through a main flow path, extending from a surge tank to a heat exchanger, to deliver an oxygen product. The surge tank receives the oxygen-rich liquid from a bottom region of the lower pressure column of the plant. Additionally, during normal operations, a stream of the oxygen-rich liquid is also introduced to a reserve storage tank through a backup flow path. During a transient operation, where the air separation plant has ceased operation, the surge tank is isolated and liquid is pumped from the surge tank through an auxiliary flow path to an auxiliary vaporizer to continue the supply of the oxygen product and the surge tank is replenished with oxygen-rich liquid previously stored in the reserve storage tank.

  • Patent number: 10118823
Abstract: A method of operating an oxygen transport membrane based reforming system employing one or more packs of thermally coupled panels of reformer tubes and oxygen transport membrane (“OTM”) reactors close to thermo-neutral point is provided. The method produces syngas by converting a hydrocarbon-containing feed, such as natural gas in the reformer tubes of a pack by endothermic steam reforming reactions. The heat required for endothermic reforming reactions is provided by exothermic oxidizing reactions occurring inside the OTM reactors of the pack. At a thermo-neutral point the heat released by exothermic reactions matches the heat required to support endothermic reactions and heat losses in the pack. The method modulates the flow rate of hydrocarbon-containing feed and/or steam-to-carbon ratio of the combined feed to the pack to maintain the surface temperature of oxygen transport membrane reactors below a target maximum temperature.

  • Patent number: 10113792
Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating air in which production of the liquid products can be selectively varied between high and low production rates by varying the pressure ratio across a turboexpander used in imparting refrigeration with the use of a branched flow path. The branched flow path has a system of valves to selectively and gradually introduce a compressed refrigerant air stream into either a booster compressor branch having a booster compressor to increase the pressure ratio during high modes of liquid production or a bypass branch that bypasses the booster compressor to decrease the pressure ratio during low modes of liquid production. A recycle branch is connected to the booster compressor branch to allow compressed air to be independently recycled from the outlet to the inlet of the booster compressor during turndown from the high to the low liquid mode of liquid production to prevent surge.

  • Patent number: 10105637
Abstract: In a cyclic adsorptive gas purification process, an impurity laden adsorbent is regenerated by exposing it first to an unheated gas for a pre-determined time period to desorb at least some of the impurity, followed by heating the adsorbent using a flowing stream of a heated gas to desorb the remaining impurities over another pre-determined time period, further followed by cooling of the adsorbent using a flowing stream of gas for yet another pre-determined time period to make it ready for repeating the adsorptive cycle. Introducing an unheated purge stream reduces the energy requirements for the regeneration step compared to a traditional TSA process.

  • Patent number: 10090133
Abstract: A novel composition, system and method for improving beam current during boron ion implantation are provided. In a preferred aspect, the boron ion implant process involves utilizing B2H6, 11BF3 and H2 at specific ranges of concentrations. The B2H6 is selected to have an ionization cross-section higher than that of the BF3 at an operating arc voltage of an ion source utilized during generation and implantation of active hydrogen ions species. The hydrogen allows higher levels of B2H6 to be introduced into the BF3 without reduction in F ion scavenging. The active boron ions produce an improved beam current characterized by maintaining or increasing the beam current level without incurring degradation of the ion source when compared to a beam current generated from conventional boron precursor materials.

  • Patent number: 10082333
Abstract: An argon reflux condensation system and method in which a plurality of once-through condensers are connected to an argon column of an air separation plant to condense argon-rich vapor streams for production of reflux to the argon column. Condensation of the argon-rich vapor streams is brought about through indirect heat exchange with crude liquid oxygen streams that partially vaporize and are introduced into a lower pressure column of the plant for further refinement. The flow rate of the crude liquid oxygen streams are sensed and controlled at locations in the air separation plant where the crude liquid oxygen is in a liquid state and in proportion to the size of the once-through heat exchangers. Prior to flowing into the once-through condensers, the partially vaporized crude oxygen stream enters a phase separator which separates the crude oxygen vapor from the crude liquid oxygen.
