    Abstract: A circuit and method for detecting a vertical cut in a sequence of digital video images. Each pixel of a video frame is filtered then compared to a filter threshold. If the threshold is met, a current pixel bit is set as active. A delayed pixel bit is generated from the current pixel bit, and a changed pixel bit is generated if either but not both of the current pixel bit and the delayed pixel bit is active. Active pixels are counted. The count of active pixels in the current image and the count of active pixels in the delayed image are used to weight the active pixel count of the changed image. The counts are used to determine a change value for the current image. The change value may be a large positive value, a large negative value, or neither. A predefined pattern of the change values over a sequence of frames indicates a vertical cut in the sequence.

For example, a variable delay may be added to a segment of the primary feed to increase or decrease a time period associated with the segment.

    Abstract: The total running time of an original program signal, with related embedded ancillary data is altered to generate a time-shortened (or time-lengthened) program signal. The video signal embedded ancillary data packets are subject to separate processing without decoding payload text strings and caption information. The video portion of the original program signal is processed by deleting (or adding) individual frames on a manual, periodic or automatic basis. As fields or frames are removed (or added), corresponding ancillary data packets and text-based payload information are temporarily stored and analyzed such that data can be reassembled within the time-altered video program. Embedded circuitry determines the type of caption and subtitle information (HD/SD) and location within the Vertical Ancillary (VANC) and Horizontal Ancillary (HANC) packets for processing coupled with the original video signal.

    Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for time altering one or more discrete digital audio/video program segments, each program segment having distinct In time and Out time code points. Data from the digital program segments are received from a data source and decoded. The decoded data are modulated as a serial data stream. The modulated decoded data are provided to a time altering processor to remove or duplicate frame positions to time alter the frame sequence. The resulting time altered serial data stream is demodulated to provide buffered program segment data. The buffered and time altered program segments are encoded and provided in a desired file or streaming format. Audio synchronization with the video is maintained by duplication or removal of audio samples corresponding to the duplicated or removed video frames.

    Abstract: The total running time of an original multi-channel program signal is altered to generate a time-shortened (or time-lengthened) program signal. The original program signal may be thought of subdividable into a sequence of program signal portions, each program signal portion being further subdividable into a sequence of signal windows. Differencing circuitry determines, for each program siganl portion, a difference value indicative of a best differnce match between an initial signal window in that signal portion and subsequent signal windows in that signal portion in accordance with a predefined criterion. Removal circuitry then deletes from the original multi-channel program signal a multi-window segment of that signal portion, the deleted segment beginning with the initial signal window and ending with the subsequent signal window that generated the best difference match.

    Abstract: A double standards converter for converting video signals formatted according to a first standard having a slower frame rate to a second standard having a faster frame rate prior to intermediate signal processing, and for converting the signals resulting from the intermediate signal processing to a third format having the same frame rate as the original video signals. The input video signals are first time base corrected and then converted to the second format repeating a frame in a periodic manner related to the time ratios between the first and second frame rates. After intermediate signal processing, the resulting signals are converted to the third format having the slower frame rate by deleting each repeated frame. Each repeated frame presented to the intermediate signal processor is excepted from the intermediate signal processing in order to avoid the introduction of discontinuities when the leading and trailing frames are joined by deleting the repeated frame.
