    Abstract: A self-priming pressure-sensitive adhesive bonding tape is provided having a layer of a primary pressure-sensitive adhesive material coated onto one or more surfaces with a film of a secondary pressure-sensitive adhesive material. Both the primary and secondary pressure-sensitive adhesives are modified by the addition of adhesion promoters to enhance the wetting characteristics of the tape. The film thickness of the secondary pressure-sensitive adhesive is such that the film has discontinuities which enable at least a portion of the primary pressure-sensitive adhesive layer to be directly exposed to the substrate. Bonding is accomplished with the participation of both the primary and secondary pressure-sensitive adhesives.

    Abstract: A wear surface such as steel bridge deck surfaced with a wear-resistant overlay such as plastic tiles is disclosed in which the tiles are bonded to the deck by means of a bonding layer having preferably a shore 00 hardness of from approximately 78 to 90 and comprising an elastomer compounded with a stiffening filler in an amount equal to at least about half the weight of the elastomer. Low volatile liquid plasticizer is present in an amount to provide the stated hardness. The elastomer is preferably a mixture of acrylic elastomer and butyl elastomers, and the stiffening filler is a high abrasion furnace carbon black. The tiles are adhered to the layer with a solution coating comprising neoprene in admixture with a terpene-phenolic resin and the coating desirably includes a hydrophobic silica.

    Abstract: A combination of a window glass with a trim strip intended to conceal the juncture between the window glass and the panels which define a body opening in a vehicle is disclosed in which the trim strip is formed with an inwardly projecting portion which is adhesively secured to the upper surface of the window glass adjacent its edge, an outwardly projecting portion which is intended to overlie the vehicle body panels adjacent the body opening therein, and a centrally located downwardly projecting positioning leg which bears against the edge of the window glass to correctly position the trim strip with respect to the glass. In preferred practice a rubber dam is adhered to the undersurface of the window glass adjacent its edge and the outer face of the positioning leg is formed with one or more protuberances which interlock with a sealant which is carried by the flanged body panels of the vehicle.

    Abstract: An elongated composite molding strip is disclosed having two laterally offset portions of different character which provide a two-stripe appearance. In this molding strip, a first adherent elastomer tape carries a decorative film positioned to cover one side of the tape with a first side margin of the film projecting beyond one side margin of the first tape, and being folded thereunder. A decorative molding is positioned on the uncovered side of the first tape, one side margin of the molding being coextensive with the other side margin of the first tape, and the other side margin of the molding extending over the adjacent side margin of the film. A second adherent elastomer tape underlies the first elastomer tape and is coextensive therewith so that the second elastomer tape traps the folded under side margin of the film and provides an exposed adherent surface.

    Abstract: A coated bonding tape having improved peel strength combined with low temperature flexibility is disclosed in which a layer of impact-resistant material constituted by a milled layer of pigmented and plasticized elastomer is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating and in which the elastomer layer consists essentially of butyl rubbers, pigment and sufficient plasticizer for the elastomer to provide a half thickness reduction at a pressure below 800 psi. At least about 45% of the butyl rubber is cross-linked, at least about 20% of the butyl rubber is noncross-linked and has an average molecular weight of at least about 250,000, and at least about 60% of the pigment is of reinforcing character, the proportion of plasticizer providing a tape body having a strength of at least about 30 psi before plastic flow begins, and the pressure-sensitive adhesive coating is selected to provide a bond to the tape body which is strong enough to force the bonding tape to fail cohesively when peeled from a substrate.

    Abstract: An elongated extruded strip adapted to be mechanically secured to a slotted sheet-like substrate is provided by extruding an elongated thermoplastic strip having a body portion which includes a rear face having a rearwardly projecting rail and then notching out longitudinally spaced portions of the rail to provide longitudinally spaced teeth. The strip is pressed against the sheet to force the teeth through the slots and heat is applied to the portions of the teeth which project through the slots to form a head or bead on the teeth and thereby mechanically secure the strip to the substrate. The strip is preferably formed to include at least one side support and/or at least one resilient adhesive tape may be used to allow the strip to deform when pressed against the substrate to force the teeth to project further through the slots to insure a tight securement. The teeth may have an arrowhead when the sheet-like substrate is of uniform thickness.

    Abstract: A laterally bent, impact resistant, reflective trim strip adapted to be longitudinally curved without subsequent wrinkling of the reflective material is formed to include an extrusion comprising a transparent plastic sheath encapsulating a composite metallized strip. This metallized strip has a film of metal sandwiched between and bonded to a layer of high strength and high temperature resistant transparent plastic, such as polyethylene terephthalate, and a layer of opaque plastic, so that the metal film is visible through the front face of the extrusion. The lateral shape of the extrusion provides a central portion lying in one plane and an edge portion lying in another plane so that when the extrusion is longitudinally curved, either the central portion or the edge portion will be placed in compression.

    Abstract: New sealing adhesive bed compositions for glazing are form retaining and comprise elastomeric material initially mixed with plasticizers of low volatility and finely divided solids which either are of fibrous form or produce thixotropic mixtures with the plasticizers. A ratio range of from 3/4 to 21/2 parts non-volatile plasticizers to one part elastomeric material, and from 0.3 to 21/2 parts such finely divided solids to one part elastomeric material is present. Other kinds of finely divided solids and other ingredients may be present. The glazing strand is formed by extrusion, and the formed strand is not cured after extrusion. The tapes permanently deform under pressure when the glass is installed, have low spring back and exhibit little or no creep or cold flow in service.
