  • Patent number: 8917673
Abstract: Transmission techniques using configurable channels for the downlink and/or uplink are described. In one aspect, the downlink channel and/or uplink channel may be independently selected for a terminal. The terminal may establish a connection with a base station on default downlink and uplink channels. Another downlink channel and/or another uplink channel may be selected based on various factors such as channel quality, loading, and interference. The terminal would then switch to the new downlink and/or uplink channel for communication. In another aspect, the base stations broadcast sector information used by the terminals for communication and/or channel selection. The sector information may include various types of information such as the available downlink and uplink channels, the frequencies of the available channels, the loading on the available channels, and QoS information. The terminals may select a sector, a downlink channel, and/or an uplink channel based on the sector information.

  • Patent number: 8738056
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that generate pilots for signal acquisition in a wireless communication system based on time domain sequences. The pilots may be generated by a base station and transmitted in a pilot field to one or more access terminals to aid in signal acquisition at each of the access terminals. One of the pilots may be common to all access points in the wireless communication system, thereby allowing an access terminal to obtain a timing estimate for the system while minimizing the effects of interference variations between base stations. Further, one or more generated pilots may be unique to each access point in order to allow each respective access point to be identified by its generated pilots.

  • Patent number: 8634435
Abstract: A method of wireless communication includes partitioning coexistence tasks between short term policy setting tasks and policy implementing tasks, processing the short term policy setting tasks using a first set of computing resources, and processing the policy implementing tasks using a second set of computing resources. The first set may be software resources configured for slower execution of tasks and the second set may be hardware resources configured for just-in-time execution of tasks. The policy may determine a time after which a first radio event is not to be interrupted and granting or denying later events based on whether they would begin before or after the do-not-interrupt time. The do-not-interrupt time may be based on a weighted priority of the first radio event.

  • Publication number: 20130201056
Abstract: A method and system for assisting mobile stations to locate a satellite use an efficient messaging format. A server computes a correction between coarse orbit data of a satellite and precise orbit data of the satellite. A coordinate system is chosen such that variation of the correction is substantially smooth over time. The server further approximates the correction with mathematical functions to reduce the number of bits necessary for transmission to a mobile station. The mobile station, upon receiving the coefficients, evaluates the mathematical functions using the coefficients and a time of applicability (e.g., the current time), converts the evaluated result to a standard coordinate system, and applies the conversion result to the coarse orbit data to obtain the precise orbit data.

  • Publication number: 20130121313
Abstract: In an embodiment, a user equipment (UE) determines to originate a communication session, and the UE further determines whether an access network serving the UE supports header compression. Based on the header compression determination, the UE establishes on a given bundling factor (BF). The UE transmits a first set of media packets to a server during the communication session, the first set of media packets each including a first number of media frames based on the given BF. The server determines target BF(s) for target UE(s) and determines whether to modify the given BF based on the target BF(s). Based on these determinations, the server transmits a second set of media packets either unmodified from the first stream of data packets, or modified based on the target BF(s). The target UE(s) receive the second stream of data packets and set a de-jitter buffer size based on the associated BF.

  • Patent number: 8009761
Abstract: A “unified” modulator for multiple modulation schemes (e.g., GMSK and 8PSK) is described. The waveform for each modulation scheme is generated based on a set of one or more pulse shaping functions. The waveforms for all supported modulation schemes may be generated based on a composite set of all the different pulse shaping functions. The unified modulator includes a filter for each pulse shaping function in the composite set. To generate the waveform for a selected modulation scheme, the set of one or more filters for this modulation scheme is enabled and all other filters are disabled. The outputs from all enabled filters are summed to generate a modulator output. When switching between modulation schemes, a smooth transition may be obtained by (1) providing a suitable data pattern for each filter to be enabled or disabled and (2) generating symbols for the new modulation scheme with an appropriate initial phase.

  • Publication number: 20110158116
Abstract: Aspects are disclosed for facilitating a timing alignment in a multicarrier system. In one aspect, at least one downlink timing associated with at least one downlink carrier is determined, and an uplink timing associated with an uplink group of carriers is ascertained based on at least one downlink timing and a timing offset associated with the uplink group of carriers. In another aspect, a downlink communication is transmitted to a wireless terminal via at least one downlink carrier. This embodiment further includes assigning a timing offset to an uplink group of carriers, and providing the timing offset to the wireless terminal via the at least one downlink carrier. An uplink communication is then received via the uplink group of carriers according to the timing offset.
